Source: Variety
January 9, 2007

Rob Cohen is in talks with Universal Pictures to direct the third installment of "The Mummy" franchise. The film, targeted for a 2008 release, was written by "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

Though no deals are in place for franchise stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to return, both actors have had discussions about reprising their roles.

Stephen Sommers helmed the first two "Mummy" installments which after being released in 1999 and 2001 earned a combined worldwide gross of $849 million.

Producing the third film are Sommers and Bob Ducsay through the Sommers Co. as well as Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks via the Sean Daniel Co.

Mummy 3 Story Details Unwrapped
Source: SCI FI Wire
January 22, 2007

SCI FI Wire talked to Al Gough, who is co-writing the third "Mummy" film with partner Miles Millar for director Rob Cohen and Universal Pictures. Gough revealed that the story will involve the grown son of Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evie (Rachel Weisz). You'll be seeing a new mummy as well.

"We figured out a really good family story with Rick and Evie, and [their son] Alex is now grown up. So it's really interesting." Alex was played as a young boy in 2001's The Mummy Returns by Freddie Boath.

He added that Fraser and Weisz are in talks to return. They are expected to start shooting this summer for a summer 2008 release.

Jet Li is The Mummy
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
March 22, 2007

Jet Li is in talks to play the villainous title character in Universal Pictures' The Mummy 3, being directed by Rob Cohen. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the script.

Plot details of the script are being kept under wraps, says The Hollywood Reporter. However, it is known that the action is set in China, with Li's story beginning in ancient times before moving to a post-World War II setting. It is also known that one sequence involves the famous terra-cotta warriors, the collection of 6,000 men and their horses that were originally constructed to protect the tomb of an emperor.

Stephen Sommers and Bob Ducsay along with Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks are producing.

Fraser Returns for The Mummy 3
Source: Variety
April 12, 2007

Variety reports that Brendan Fraser has closed a rich deal to return in The Mummy 3, but Rachel Weisz is not coming back.

Rob Cohen will direct the film, which is expected to begin production late in the summer. It will be set in China and will introduce Jet Li as a villain.

Universal is planning a July 18, 2008 release. The franchise has earned more than $830 million worldwide. The Mummy was released in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001.

Weisz has has dropped out of talks to reprise her role. She has several other projects coming up, including The Brothers Bloom and Phillip Noyce's Outback drama Dirt Music, set to begin shooting in August.

The script is by "Smallville" creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will do another pass that will factor in the absence of Weisz. Universal is holding up a greenlight pending a final rewrite, but a late summer start date is still expected.

The Mummy and Smallville scripting? Should be really good. Not sure if it is good enough to see in theatres though.

I like how "Fearless" was Li's "last" martial arts film.

Yet he's going to do films predicated upon his ability to conduct martial arts stunts.

Last Chinese martial arts epic.

Get it straight.

I know I am the only one in the world, and that he is good at it, but he drives me crazy with his slapstick lunacy. I once walked out of one of his movies.
I once walked out of one of Jet Li's movies (Romeo Must Die which might be the worst movie I've seen) and haven't seen another one since. But I liked the first 2 Mummy movies, so I have a dilemma.

There's a lot wrong with this movie, the two biggest wrongs being Maria Bello (taking Rachel Weisz's place) and Luke Ford as Alex, their son. They simply didn't play well, especially Ford.... a severe case of really bad acting. Plot was so-so. Abominable snowmen really cool.

That being considered, it still was a very watchable and enjoyable film, albeit the least of the franchise. Saw it at a matinée, so I feel I got my money's worth. Great CG.

2.5 out of 5 stars.  .5

I caught this film yesterday. Among the field of awesome movies this summer, this one is kind of left in the dust.

However, it was what I expected. So I was able to enjoy it for what it is, a typical summer-popcorn movie.

It was average at best, but it was entertaining.
