The News-Press selects athletes that stood out the week before based on a combination of coach reports and school nominations sent to [email protected] and our coverage. Those athletes are put in a poll each Monday on news-press.com and you, our readers, vote on who you think did it best. The winners of The News-Press Athlete of the Week poll sponsored by Elevate Home Services receive a T-shirt from BSN Sports and a tote bag from the USA Today High School Sports Awards. To get to know our winners better, The News-Press will have a question-and-answer session with each athlete.
The News-Press Athlete of the Week sponsored by Elevate Home Services winner for March 3-8 with 54% of the votes is Bishop Verot track athlete Jyden German. The sophomore came in first in the 100- and 200-meter races at the Edison Relays. German, the son of Fort Myers High football legend Jammi German, ran for Evangelical Christian his eight-grade year, Fort Myers High as a freshman, transferred to Bishop Verot over the winter, and runs for the Vikings this spring.
Previous Winner: The News-Press Athlete of the Week for Feb. 24-March 1: Canterbury lacrosse player Brock Catlin
Question: You are off to a good start. What are your goals for this year?
German: State Champion. Definitely. I've been to states my eighth grade year, and then last year as a freshman, I came up empty-handed. So this year, I'm just trying to leave with something. I'm definitely trying to leave with something. But the goal has always been to win the championship in 100 and the 200.
How much does track help you with football?
German: I mean, you know, they go hand in hand. You need speed. Speed is the name of the game. So I really take track serious. I put everything into it, and I don't even, I'm not even doing anything for football. My coach gets mad at me. He's like, you need to come run routes. I'm like, No, I got to stay focused on track right now.
How have things been going on the football recruiting trail? Any visits planned?
German: I talked to Louisville recently. I talked again to West Virginia. They re-offered me a month or two ago. I think I'm planning on going up to Louisville. It's just hard right now because track takes up so much time, I run almost every weekend, so I don't know, but I think definitely Louisville I'm planning on going for sure.
Being a sophomore, you still have plenty of time. Do you think about the offers and being recruited much?
German: I try not to think about it too much. I just try to live in the present and just keep performing. Because, you know, I try not to let it get to my head. That's the main thing. Just staying humble and keep working, just letting my talent, my hard work pay off.
How has the transition been since transferring from Fort Myers to Bishop Verot?
German: It's been good. They definitely welcomed me with open arms, and I'm grateful. I just felt like it was a better opportunity. And I feel like I could do great things over here. You see, I'm already starting right now. So just keep working is the thing. Coach (Richie) Rode, the whole coaching staff, the school, everybody, they just welcomed me. So it's really a blessing.
Your father Jammi was a high school football legend at Fort Myers High. Was it hard to leave his alma mater or did you want top blaze your own path?
German: My dad always told me he wanted to be my own person, my own man. And he actually was the one who said this would be the better move for me. You know, I sat down and had to talk with him and my mom. They play a big role in every decision I make. So we sat down and we thought this would be the best move. So here we are and trying to make the most of it. He just told me, if I make it, I got to stick with my decision, you know, and that's what I'm doing, just making the most of it.
Although still young yourself, what advice would you give to a younger teammate or athlete about succeeding as a varsity athlete?
German: Just work. That's the main thing. Work, work and work some more. That's all I do. Just continue to work. Yeah, it takes hours. It takes sacrifices. I remember, you know, Christmas Day, I was out on the track, working. Christmas breaks. Spring breaks. We just had a Monday off. I was here early morning, working. That's all it takes. Just work and dedication, consistency and all those things. You put those together, you'll be all right.
