I was never bored with how the show started. You find out soon enough that he's not who he pretends to be and is motivated by things other than being a night manager at a 1st class hotel. The intrigue builds when he becomes 'recruited' It is based on a John LeCarre novel which generally don't start with someone coming at you with a knife or something like that. His were mostly cold war spy settings which move ploddingly and not always to a clear conclusion.
Even though they, at times, are glacial in their pacing, I just happen to like spy stories and am guessing that doesn't appeal to everyone.
