Someone refresh my memory... is it a good idea or a bad idea to toss out fat multiyear contracts to 30+ year old guys who have been wildly inconsistent (and never great) in their careers?

I believe Aaron Hill was 29 when we signed him. I believe Ross was 32 when we signed him...
inconsistent but for the most part a solid contributor who would occasionally go on a hot streak and carry you a bit and you hoped that his cold streaks would be covered by the other guys on the team that you would expect more consistent production from
