The following as part of an article on AZcentral today. It is written by Paul Coro, who is now apparently covering the Phoenix Suns in the NBA for the Arizona Republic.

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/0229nbainsider0229.html

The list
The Suns are one of nine teams that are owed first-round draft picks.

The Suns also owe one to the Spurs, but it's protected until 2010 if it's in the top 20. Most of the others also are protected. Here's the rundown of who's owed what:

Atlanta: First available 2007 pick from Philadelphia and a protected pick from Detroit.
Boston: Protected pick from Dallas and this year's pick from Detroit.
Cleveland: Protected pick from Toronto.
Denver: Protected pick from the Clippers and a protected pick from Philadelphia that is first available in 2005.
Orlando: Protected pick from Washington and a protected pick from Sacramento that is first available in 2005.
Phoenix: Protected pick from Cleveland.
Portland: Protected pick from Memphis.
San Antonio: Protected pick from Phoenix.
Utah: Protected pick from Houston and this year's pick from New York

That doesn't seem very credible.

Because one thing is sure, it could also be our pick that goes to Utah.

I thought the guy was assuming that the New York Knicks would finish with a better record than the Phoenix Suns. Until I just checked the standings I didn't realize how bad the records are for the last three playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. If they were in the Eastern Conference the Phoenix Suns would only be 6 games out of the playoffs right now with a 20-40 record.

Still, with only 20 or so games left in the season it's pretty unlikely the suns will finish with a better record than the Knicks.

Nope, I'm still confused.

Yes, but the Knicks could still jump over the Suns in the lottery. Won't the pick be "transferred" after the lottery is held?

My understanding is that it will be the worst of the two picks--Sun's pick or Knicks pick. That, at least, was how it was reported when the trade came down.

I don't think the Cleveland pick comes into play.

If both the Suns pick and the Knicks pick are lottery, me (as Eric has stated) it will not be conveyed until after the lottery and we know which is the lower pick.

It actually might be better to have only one pick this year. We've got enough young players to develop as it is. We will add Milos and a rookie next year.

If Cleveland slips into the playoffs, I suppose it is OK. They might be better next year, and so the pick might not be as good. If that happens I'd consider trading the Cleveland pick for a future first rounder.

Almost all the interest in the second pick would be to use it to clear cap space or as part of a trade. It seems extremely unlikely that the Suns could get someone to help next year. If the Cleveland pick does come through and it is not used in a trade or cap deal, then their best bet may be to use it on a Euro that would be encourage to stay there for another year or two.

Just for the record. It is in the Suns best interest that the Knicks fall hard, and drop out of the playoffs.

The reason is that the pick will not be conveyed until AFTER the draft. So, if the Knick pick is in the lottery, it gives us more chances to get the top pick. I know its remote, but it is still something.

There is always the chance that the Knicks pick could be the top pick. If so, we convey the Suns pick instead.

This is a great way to think about it. The last week or two I have been just praying the New York Knicks would make the playoffs, so the Phoenix Suns did not look like total idiots for trading away the pick for money. I mean even if they do deserve it I don't like to see them look bad. You are right though. It does make sense to hope that the New York Knicks end up in the lottery , so the Suns have a better chance at one of the top three picks.

I was rooting against the Knicks just on general principles, so I'm glad to have a good reason to it. :D
