With Helen Mirren -- about the current Queen Elizabeth, and how the royal family and newly-elected Tony Blair tried to cope with (or avoid, in the royals' case) Princess Diana's death and its impact on the public. It's an odd movie, and actual documentary footage of Diana and the crowds are used, but the acting is just superb on all parts. Mirren has to be up for an Oscar on this.

I thought it was a very well done movie. I loved the docu-drama aspect, mixing in real footage of the royals and Diana and both British and American newscasts. The film had somewhat of a vouyeristic feel to it and the intense relationships of the characters was very enjoyable to me.

Michael Sheen was amazing as Tony Blair, a role he had played in another production.

Helen Miran has to be a lock for the Best Actress Oscar, but I dont think this film will win Best Picture.

Wow, this movie was absolutely fantastic. What a great look and insight into the Monarchy and also Tony Blair.

The performances were stunning.

I don't remember a lot about what happened back then and I wish I had payed attention so I could have understood more of the background.

I wonder what the British people think of this movie and if it changed any feelings they had towards their Queen and what happened, or if that was all forgiven long ago.

Still...this was just superb...

5 star movie, no doubt, even if it did have a little bit of an odd feel to it. If portrayed accurately, Tony Blair pretty much saved the monarchy single-handedly....

I recently watched this. Excellent movie. I can clearly remember the night back in 1997 when she died. My in-laws were in town and we stayed up half the night watching the news. Great performances by everyone, not just Miran.

Once again why?
I guess to try to figure out what happened; get as much news on it as possible. Although you might not (apparently) get it, she was beloved around the world. I was in utter shock when she died.

Thats just it. I for one dont get the fascination with the Royal family. Why were people so enthralled with her and everything she did? I dont buy that it was because she was charitable. She certainly wasnt a stunning beauty in any sense of the imagination. I about gag everytime I hear people say she was.

I still dont get it to this day everytime I see a magazine headline about her children or Prince Charles etc.... Its all completely mind boggling and to be completely honest dumb IMO.

All royalty is IMO is a reminder of many years of past opression of the haves and have nots. Royalty was and is a reminder of some pretty brutal times in the history of the world including England.

To each their own. She was charismatically beautiful, imho, as opposed to classically beautiful. She was an inspiring humanitarian, and I always respected how she handled herself with such class when it came to her ass of a husband. I don't give a rat's ass about any of the rest of the Royal Family.

I just get fascinated with the history of it all...I mean her family line has been directly there for a thousand years? Maybe more?

It's amazing to me to just see visual evidence of a long family line, knowing she is directly related to the Queen to sent Columbus off to discover the new world.

That's just what gets me.

:D

Check out the movie Shane; it gives a lot of background on why she was so loved. She was basically a normal person who became a princess...the "people's princess".

I couldn't care less about the royal family, but she was someone that affected a LOT of people.

*hint hint* It wasn't the English that sent Columbus to the New World ;)

Another *hint hint* Diana has no royal blood line. She was a commoner and was only married into the royal family and actually never was a true princess or should have been given the title like the media always gave her.

Found this tidbit: Diana, Princess of Wales (Diana Frances Mountbatten-Windsor, née Spencer) (1 July 1961–31 August 1997) was the first wife of HRH The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. From her marriage in 1981 to her divorce in 1996 she was styled Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales. She was almost always called Princess Diana by the media despite never having had the right to that title, as it would imply that she was a princess by birthright rather than by marriage.

Yeah, but the movie's not 'Princess Di', it's 'The Queen'. There is no actress playing Princess Di, and relatively small amounts of screen time on her TV appearances. It's all about the private lives of the royals and how inept and out of touch they really were with the people. The movie does show Charles in a good light.

I remember exactly where I was when I found out she died. I was in Great Lakes, IL for Navy Basic Training. I was in their hospital, because the boots I received were making my feet swell. When I got out of the hospital, no one believed me that she had died, and thought I was kidding. You are so isolated from the outside world when you are in Basic.
