Source: The Hollywood Reporter
March 21, 2005

With DreamWorks' The Ring Two earning an estimated $36 million this weekend for first place, the studio may be looking for a third film in the franchise.

In regards to the possibility of third picture, head of distribution Jim Tharp told The Hollywood Reporter that "We've certainly been working on a 'The Ring Three' script, but there's been no final determination."

The first movie collected $249.3 million worldwide.

Not having seen the second one, I wonder if it's advanced from VHS to DVD yet? Who still watches VHS tapes anyway? :D

As much as I love the X-Files, The Ring was better than Fight the Future. Easily better.

that's fine - you have your opinon. I thought the Ring was friggin lame.

It's just irritating when all these movies are getting sequels (MISS CONGENIALITY 2????? ) and the one movie I would die to have a sequel for is the X-Files!

Hideo Nakata Up for The Ring Three
Source: Chicago Sun-Times
March 21, 2005

The Ring Two director Hideo Nakata tells the Chicago Sun-Times that he doesn't rule out another installment. "I wouldn't be surprised if there was another one," Nakata said. "I'd love to do 'Ring Three.'"

He adds that they may be looking to do a prequel. "In Japan, I directed a 'Ring' prequel called 'Ring Zero.' It's about how the little girl was killed at age 8," he divulges.

In related news, Moviehole is reporting that Naomi Watts may not come back for the third film because DreamWorks "will go off in a different direction for the second sequel". If it's indeed the above-mentioned prequel, that would make sense.

The Ring 3 Moving Forward
Source: Variety
May 27, 2005

Variety has learned that DreamWorks Pictures is moving forward on its third installment of "The Ring." No writer is on board, but producer Walter Parkes has confirmed that The Ring 3 is being developed and that the new film will be made on a smaller scale than the first two.

Those films, both of which starred Naomi Watts, were in the $60 million range, adds the trade. Watts will likely not star this time around.

The Ring, released in 2002, grossed $129 million domestically. The Ring 2, which was released earlier this year, took in $75 million.

Dang, it looks like this might come out next year. There is absolutely no reason to watch it if Naomi isn't in it.

I absolutely loved the first one. Definitely made it into my top 10 list. The second movie was a complete dissapointment, however. I'm guessing the third Ring will be equally as horrible. :(

A Third Ring Still Possible?
Source: Bloody-Disgusting
January 6, 2007

Bloody-Disgusting spoke to producer Roy Lee, who said a third "Ring" movie is still possible:

As of right now the plan is to hold the film for a few years and go into the franchise "with a new fresh story," Lee tells Bloody-Disgusting. So the good news is that one day we might see the return of Samara! The original plan was to tell the origins of Samara in a similar fashion to the Japanese film "Ring 0: Birthday."

Naomi Watts and David Dorfman starred in the first two films as Rachel and Aidan Keller.
