The roof at Chase Field is really starting to bug me

I recently move and drive past the ballpark everyday now to and from work. The bright white paint they used to page over the "Bank One Ballpark" name really bugs me since the rest of the roof is a really faded off white/grimy dirt color.

We have to have the most worn down looking 10 year old baseball stadium in MLB. CLASSY!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I just needed to rant.

I've noticed the stark decline of the stadium's appearance since I started working downtown two years ago.

Kind of embarrassing if you think about it.

In reality it's a big airplane hanger with a baseball field in the middle. Ultimately you get what you pay for.

They really should have picked a different color for the roof.

They really should have picked a different place to put it.

Are you insane? Like where? Out in the suburbs somewhere? Just what Phoenix needs, another excuse to sprawl. Once the Jackson St District gets going, we'll have something very comparable to Denvers LoDo and you (and everyone else) will be glad both the Suns and D'backs are downtown.

I too hate the big white paint squares, they look horrid. What I'd actually like to see is the roof (or at least those two middle sections, which are always exposed to the sky) covered in photovoltaic cells. That would probably be too expensive though. A copper roof would look amazing (if they kept it copper or let it rust and turn to turquoise, either way).

Also, I've always thought it would be awesome if they replaced the outfield panel ads with just glass. It would make the stadium feel a lot more open, even when the roofs open (the windows would still be able to open/close), and you'd have cool views towards downtown.

EDIT: Also, another improvement I'd like to see made to the stadium (which I think could actually be done somewhat easily) is a redo of the north side. There's a very seldom used plaza that faces north and a small parking lot. I'd like to see that are converted into 2 stories of retail/restaurants (think Sliders) that faces North towards Jefferson. The stadium does a good job of interacting with the street on the West side, with the plaza, and can't really on the South and East sides (with the bridge and railroad tracks), so I'd like to see that north side become used more often. Sadly, the Garage Mahal sits across from it, choking off 2 sections of downtown from each other and making turning Jefferson into a walkable area difficult, but hopefully someday that beast will be knocked down.

If they used the same material the Cards use for UofP Stadium even on the panels it would allow so much more light through.

My guess is it's dust. I've noticed the dingy brown since like 99 or 2000 or thereabouts. They can clean it off if they want to I believe (if it's dust, and I think they have before), but my guess is the paint was a whiter white then the duller white they originally used and thus since it's newer it isn't covered with as many fine particles of dust. I'm no expert ofc, but I think it's just dust.

True, I like that that allows in more light, however, I was thinking glass so you'd actually be able to see out to the (growing) skyline. I wish Chase Fields roof was similar to the Cards, its a lot more open feeling for sure.

Well, considering that it's the desert, it's bound to happen that the roof looks that way. Scorching sun to fade any paint or powder coating, and the constant dust in the air that settles on top.

Maybe they should just paint it brown.

Hoover, for similar money, we could have had a better stadium in one of those suburbs you mock.

These downtown cramming schemes benefit few besides the owners of the surrounding properties.

Access and parking are a nightmare to both Suns and Dbaks games. Egress after games is worse, particularly from Dbaks games. The last game I went to last year, I was funneled in slow moving traffic for more than 20 minutes in a direction completely opposite to the way I needed to go.

No more. I don't go anymore. I used to try to make every Dbak day game.

Like the arena the Coyotes play in that no one wants to drive out to? The only reason the Cards can draw a lot of people is becuase the games are few, only once a week, and on an off day. For sports that have a lot of games like basketball and baseball, it makes so much more sense to have them centrally located.

If you think parking is bad for Suns/Dbacks games or ANYTHING downtown, I have to say you are mentally ill. Please go to ANY city Phoenix's size and show me an easier, cheaper system of parking. Downtown/Central Phoenix has a surplus of parking, very very downtowns have that issue. For instance, the Garage Mahal directly across from Chase often doesn't fill up on game nights.

The traffic flow out is a problem, but I don't deal with it, I ride my bike to the games. When the light rail opens, it'll help a lot. When I lived in St Louis, a huge number of people took their light rail to the games, which also had the side benefit of cutting down on drunk driving.

Phoenix is enough of a donut city as it is, we certainly don't need our baseball stadium out in Apache Junction, Maricopa, Surprise or some other god forsaken far flung exurb to promote more sprawl and make it impossible for most of the city to go to a game.

A central location is best for attendance and egress after games is fine if you know what you are doing. Jobing.com Arena struggles heavily because of location as would any site in a suburb. Downtown is by far the best location for many reasons. I think you are way, way, off here, and unbelievable I completely agree with Hoover. The numbers prove it to be so.

The Coyotes dont struggle because of location. They struggle because they suck. If they were annual contenders for the cup location wouldnt matter one iota.

That is part of it, but location is a much bigger issue. Traffic during the week on I-10 West is unbearable and the location isolated them from the east valley which held 90% of all season tix prior to the move.

Nope, it looks like that in person. I see it everyday. Here is a pic from the first season with the big Bank One Ballpark logo.
