DreamWorks has hired Carter B. Smith to helm The Ruins, a horror thriller set in the Yucatan jungles that's being produced by Stuart Cornfeld at Ben Stiller's Red Hour, reports Variety.

The project is based on a novel by Scott Smith about four American friends on vacation in Cancún who find themselves lost in the jungle after being persuaded by a German tourist to join his search for his missing brother.

Scott Smith is writing the screenplay adaptation. He also wrote the novel and screenplay for 1998's A Simple Plan.

Very cool.

I think there is a review of it on the Books and music forum, started by me I believe?

But it's creepy and I couldn't put it down once I started.

Saw the trailer for this movie a while back, and it looked abysmal. Haven't read the book, but the movie looks terrible.

I just watched the trailer and I must say this will be a renter.

Hey Shane

I wrote a review about it on my PopCritics.com blog, and I felt it stuck very closely to what actually happened in the books, aside from the end and a few minor details.

What did you notice was real off?

Ok you can correct me if Im wrong since it has been over a year since I read it. But Wasnt it a different character that fell into the pit and not the German in the book? Also wasnt it the boyfriend that had the plant in his body and not the girl? Also Nobody survived in the book from my recollection? Jeff was killed while making a break for it in the night and not while creating a diversion for Amy who died in the book?

They didnt have it where they discovered the Germans brothers body and the few other bodies they found covered in weeds which clued Jeff into what was going on. They saw the one arm with the watch but there was no mention of who it was.

They absolutely should have had about 20 more minutes of movie to at least try and get some sort of character development IMO.

I think you're probably right on all that stuff, but with the ecxeption of letting someone get out alive (thanks for the spoiler warning, BTW ...j/k), those are pretty minor changes as far as movie adaptions of books. Sometimes EVERYTHING changes and you can barely recognize it as the same material.

Just watched it. Pretty bad movie.

It was bugging me the entire movie trying to figure out where I knew the lead actor from. It was the dude from The Black Donnelly's. I like his acting style, but he couldn't save this one.

I am glad that I knew to avoid this within 10 seconds of the preview.

I saw this last week. Didn't know what to expect, didn't really remember seeing any previews or trailers.

Poor job of character development. The special effects were good.

Overall, I'd give it like a 2 out of 5 stars. I thought the last 15 or 20 mintues were the only thing worth watching.
