Burnett and Sony Enter Shark Tank
Source: Variety
February 14, 2008

Mark Burnett is stepping into Sony Pictures Television's "Dragons' Den," signing on to create a U.S. version of the Japanese reality format in which aspiring entrepreneurs attempt to convince successful moguls to invest in their ideas, reports Variety.

Burnett has decided on a new name for the format -- "The Shark Tank"-- but plans to keep the essence of the idea intact.

Would-be business titans pitch their ideas to a panel of already established entrepreneurs -- the Dragons, or in the new version, the Sharks. Contestants' mission is to convince the Sharks to invest money in their concepts in the hopes of raising enough capital to move forward.

"It's about seeing people squirm, either in their unpreparedness or their lies," Burnett said.

Producer said the show plays a bit like the early rounds of "American Idol."

"People come in with an idea they think is brilliant, and it's awful," Burnett said. "But then you get the truly inspired ideas, and the Sharks have a chance to fight it out."

"If you're coming in desperate for money, it's like there's blood in the water," Burnett said. "If you want to be a great entrepreneur in the U.S., you had better be ready to swim in shark-infested waters."

Sony and Burnett begin pitching the project to networks later this month.

Anybody watching this?

Just watched 2 episodes this weekend and I have to say one of the most compelling reality shows I have seen.

I really like that there are follow ups to the investments. I was fortunate to watch 2 episodes that were aired some time apart. And the 2nd episode I watched had a follow up to one of the investments in the 1st episode. It was a treasure chest pet and with the investment and assistance of the milllionaires the lady is securing deals with major retailers.

Anyway neat show. Give it a shot for watching seriously entertaining pitches and negotiations.

Started 1/2 way through last season. Truly one of the better shows on TV. Very entertaining and interesting. The Tank can be brutal! Surprised more on here aren't watching.

I like it a lot but a horrible time slot so i have to DVR it. Wish there were more updates.

I watch it when I remember it's on but I don't have a DVR so I miss it often.

Youtube has lots of full episodes available for the Canadian version of the show which is called "Dragon's Den". It's been around for much longer. Same premise. Herjavec and O'Leary are two of the "Dragons".

Two main differences
1) Some additional one minute long segments with the weirder investments
2) Updates are in greater depth. All deals get investigated by accounting firms. That process can take months. It's not uncommon for the investors to pull out of the deal.

I've never watched the show.

My brother in law was contacted to have his business on the show. However they decided against being on the show.

Love the show as it does not get to old indeed Shane. BTW, think that Robert and Barbara seem to be the "only" normal sharks out of the five or six in the panel!

Show is getting better and better. And even a hit on weekend as most people do not watch tv over the weekend.

Funny show as well!

People that go on there and have their Shark team accept their offer. End up getting rich in the long run and thrives afterwards!

Always liked this show. And a lot of them actually end up doing pretty well after, which helps it feel a lot more "real" than other "reality" shows.
