"I see dead people," whispers little Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), scared to affirm what is to him now a daily occurrence. This peaked 9-year old, already hypersensitive to begin with, is now being haunted by seemingly malevolent spirits. Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is trying to find out what's triggering Cole's visions, but what appears to be a psychological manifestation turns out to be frighteningly real. It might be enough to scare off a lesser man, but for Malcolm it's personal--several months before, he was accosted and shot by an unhinged patient, who then turned the gun on himself. Since then, Malcolm has been in turmoil--he and his wife (Olivia Williams) are barely speaking, and his life has taken an aimless turn. Having failed his loved ones and himself, he's not about to give up on Cole.

This third feature by M. Night Shyamalan sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Many critics faulted the film for being mawkish and New Age-y, but no matter how you slice it, this is one mightily effective piece of filmmaking. The bare bones of the story are basic enough, but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, forsaking excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness. Willis is in his strong, silent type mode here, and gives the film wholly over to Osment, whose crumpled face and big eyes convey a child too wise for his years; his scenes with his mother (Toni Collette) are small, heartbreaking marvels. And even if you figure out the film's surprise ending, it packs an amazingly emotional wallop when it comes, and will have you racing to watch the movie again with a new perspective. You may be able to shake off the sentimentality of The Sixth Sense, but its craftsmanship and atmosphere will stay with you for days. --Mark Englehart
I recently watched this for the 3rd time. I watched it in the theater when it came out and then had to watch it again as soon as it was available on VHS. I think 10 years was about the right time to wait. The great performances make this rewatchable even when you know the twist.

"but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, forsaking excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness" - I thought this was a great way to phrase it.

This is one, of only two movies, that made me say "Holy ****!" out loud in the theater when the twist is revealed.

It's too bad that M. Knight couldn't keep his films at this level of movie-goodness.

This is M. Nights only good movie. Everything else has been decent (Unbreakable) to down right crap (pretty much everything else).

I know a lot of people claim they saw that twist coming but I sure didn't. It never even crosses my mind until just seconds before they hammer it home. But the only movie that drew an audible response (other than laughter) from me in the theater was the needle scene in Pulp Fiction.

yeah... I had NO CLUE it was coming and it literally took my breath away along with the rest of the theater. It was a surreal moment... it literally felt like the entire theater gasped and was pushed back in their seats.

also, that movie is just as interesting to me on second watch as it is the first because every word that Osmet is saying to him works on another level... it's only watching it then that you realize Osmet is always talking to Willis on another level. especially that scene when they see each other in the church and Osmet asks if he's freaking out... that entire conversation plays like Osmet thinks that Willis has figured out what he is. it's really incredibly brilliant screenwriting and in my opinion deserved the oscar that year over American Beauty, which to me doesn't hold up very well at all.

American Beauty makes a lot more sense if you've been married 15+ years...accept the end of course.

My wife had it ruined for her by another student in a college class right before we went to see it (blew it for the whole class on only the 4th day after it was released in theaters). Sucked for her and everyone in that class. :|

I agree that 6th Sense should have won it but random nudity is never a bad thing and I like to think the Academy finally rewarded that effort. OTOH, if that really did enter the equation, just imagine some of the movies that would have walked away with best picture. Could you imagine Big Bad Mama beating out Godfather Part II?

American Beauty makes a lot more sense if you have testicles. I don't think you have to be married 15 years to understand Kevin Spacey's motivation.

BIM: accept/except

The Village wasn't horrible and Devil was a nice comeback even though I figured out who was the demon about 10 minutes into the movie.

I thought the Village sucked because it was just so linear and predictable. I leaned over to my friend at the beginning and said, 'so, it's like 1984 in Colonial times'. She almost punched me for ruining it, but even she said she would have realized that in a few minutes anyway. Just too damned obvious.

Osment, not Osmet...but I agree completely about the screenwriting. The 2nd time I watched it was just as awesome as the first, for entirely different reasons--which is so hard to do.

I'd have beat that girl/guy down! HATE that--especially movies like The Sixth Sense--where the enjoyment of the movie is predicated on not knowing.

American Beauty blew me away emotionally -- I thought it was great -- but I never rewatched it. (Like 'Breaking the Waves' -- which I thought was an emotionally devastating movie and without question the best acting I have ever seen on film; bought a copy, but could never bring myself to rewatch it.)

Sixth Sense knocked me on my ass, jaw hit the theater floor. I've watched Sixth Sense twice (and yeah, am about due again) and it has stood the test of time as a great flick, not just a tricky one.

Not sure it's needed at this point but,

I thought Bruce Willis was dead the entire movie until the scene where he and the mom are sitting face to face appearing to have been in the middle of a discussion. Really annoyed me because if she hadn't been speaking with him it means she was just staring off into space, which I find odd

The ending to Unbreakable caught me completely off guard, which is probably why I like it better.

funny, but I saw the ending of Unbreakable coming from a mile away... still liked the movie a lot, but i was already coming up with the spoof of that sucker halfway through it.
