The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.

I recently watched this for the first time. I'm not a fan of musicals, but regardless I still really enjoyed it.

I thought Christopher Plummer's acting was a little strange though, and I can't believe how different he looked when he was young.

There are so many kinds of musicals it's difficult for me to say I'm a fan of them either. But there have been probably 20 or so through the years that I'm very fond of and Sound of Music is one of them. It's not quite my favorite musical but it is my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein offering, and it was their final collaboration too as Hammerstein died around the same time. Not that it's anywhere near as good but I'm also very fond of an earlier effort by them, the musical remake of State Fair.

I don't really care all that much for Carousel, South Pacific or Oklahoma even though all 3 are among the most successful musicals ever. Off the top of my head I'd rank my favorite musicals as My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Evita, Grease, Easter Parade, Top Hat, Guys & Dolls, West Side Story, Cabaret, State Fair, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Lil Abner (childhood favorite, probably not recommendable) and Mary Poppins. If you're in search of a musical similar in appeal to Sound of Music, I'd suggest giving My Fair Lady a try.

I have never really been a fan of musicals.... have enjoyed a couple over the years though Mary Poppins,... Jungle Book... Grease...

however they are not allowed in my house...

my daughter is odd,....apparently thinks life is a musical,...and will randomly break out singing at any given moment

I normally wouldn't mind,...at least she enjoys life right? and for 15 that's a good headstart....
but she has such a god awful voice...cannot sing a damn note......... aint having anything on my tv that may indicate it is somewhere close to normal for people to break into song....there are some things one should not encourage their children on....

I know you were probably just having a little fun here but .....

Encourage her to sing, loudly and often, anywhere and everywhere and to heck with how well she does it. If you want her to live a long and happy life, encourage her to sing as often as she likes. It's like smiling and laughing, you can never do to much of them.

This is my moms all time favorite movie. We watched it every year during the Holidays growing up. My wife loves it as well. I've seen it at least 30 times and still enjoy watching it. We have passed the tradition down to my kids and they enjoy it as well. Amazing at how well this movie has held up over time.

Two years ago my wife and I went to Oktoberfest for my 40th birthday. We made a 2 day stop in Salzburg. Got to see a ton of the sites from the movie. It was a real fun experience. I want to go back with my mom though as she would really love it.

I loved Salzburg and made many trips to that town when I was stationed in Southern Bavaria in the early to mid 70's. I didn't have the pleasure of seeing Sound Of Music when I was growing up but it was a lot of fun watching the movie for the first time in the late 70's and recognizing so much of what I'd loved about that area.

Easily my favorite musical of all time, and I, too, love the Salzburg area (It's my favorite city in the world).

I do encourage her...bought her a nice Epiphone Les Paul for Christmas.... but I encourage her to sing when she is alone...so she does it in the shower,...or while she is in the pasture with the horses,...or out by the pond...

I have several health issues these days,..but even after all those years rocking out apparently my hearing is just fine... when I tell you the girl has a god awful voice,...dude, I am being generous with it... the girl cannot hold a pitch, a key, or a rhythm ... and half the time she cannot even remember the lyrics,...so she fills in with whatever is bouncing around in her nugget...

I offered to send her to singing lessons,.........."why?"..she asks....

I feel her pain. I sing all the time, always have. My wife of almost 43 years loves to tell friends of the time I almost hit the note I was aiming for but it's urban legend. I'm off key and only our cats can harmonize with me but I still love singing. And yes, I'm almost always alone when I sing but If I do have an audience at the beginning, I don't have them for long.

Nice, Audrey Hepburn. She was absolutely adorable. I'll have to check that out. I'll wait a while though. Can't watch musicals too close together.
