While everything seems to work out perfectly for the Suns, there's one other factor to consider -- restricted free agents Robin Lopez and Aaron Brooks. Phoenix submitted qualifying offers to each player, which means their cap holds are still on the team's books. $7,156,505 for Lopez and $5,041,730 for Brooks (note that those are the amounts of the players' cap holds, rather than the qualifying offers). Those figures would push Phoenix well over the cap threshold, which wouldn't be permitted if the team wanted to use its cap space on agreements with the aforementioned three outside free agents.

True but Lope and Brooks will not recieve that much on a contract. The cap hold is 150% of the offer. So if Lopez took the offer he would only count $4million to the actual cap. I don't see Brooks coming back unless it is a S&T deal.

We will probably amnesty Childress and waive Warrick and stretch his contract which would create almost 10M$ caproom.

If we do neither we will not be able to keep Lopez or make any other moves.

At the least we would probably amnesty Warrick. Not sure if waiving him would be enough.

So what is the current situation, assuming we end up with Gordon. will we have any cap space left. will we have any cap space after next season.

Assuming we miss the playoffs next season:
2013 our own lotto pick
2013 lakers first round
2013 lakers second
Cap space????

seems like we could be in good shape.

We won't really have capspace next season if we sign Gordon.

Warrick will expire but the raises on other contracts and new rookies would take us over the cap so we would have the MLE only.

Only if we save our amnesty and let Robin Lopez walk we could have maybe 6M$ caproom next year still.

All this speculation hinges on NO not matching the offer, and it was reported that they will match, although a S&T is still possible.

If the Suns do get Gordon without moving any contracts to NO, they will most likely renounce Brooks and Lopez and sign a cheaper free agent backup center. They will still have the new exception to use for teams that started under the cap but went over, so it doesn't have to be a minimum deal.

They will not have to amnesty anyone this summer. Childress may yet prove himself valuable with the uncertainty surrounding Gordon and his history of injuries. And with Dragic, Marshall and Telfair under contract, there will be no need to bring back Brooks.

Withdrawing Brooks qualifying offer seems like a no-brainer since we have no use for him and can't sign-and-trade him because he wasn't on our payroll last year. However, the front office has expressed interest in retaining Lopez. The Suns simply can wait to hear back from New Orleans on matching Gordon or not before officially inking Beasley and/or Dragic until after those three days. This allows them to keep Lopez rights should Gordon's offer sheet be matched. Also, there is a chance New Orleans agrees to a sign-and-trade thus ridding our selves of some of our current contracts (Gortat, Dudley, etc.). It will be interesting to see it all play out.

sign a cheaper free agent backup center

like who?

I doubt there are any. Amnestying Childress has to be done, even if they let Robin Lopez go it would be better to amnesty Childress and use the money on adding another free agent asset.

If they go out and spend all of their money, amnestying Childress in the future won't be as effective as they probably wouldn't get that far under the cap to make full use of the amnesty cap reduction.

Also there are still many teams with capspace out there, chances are someone signs Childress to some sort of deal so the Suns wouldn't have to pay his full remaining salary.

There aren't a lot of options, but the Suns will probably be looking for someone to fill no more than 10-15 minutes at center, leaving the rest of minutes to Gortat and Frye, and playing Beasley at PF a lot.

There are scrubs like Gadzuric or Przybilla. There's Greg Stiemsma whom I wouldn't mind just for his shot-blocking alone. Nazr Mohammed. Kwame Brown? And of course Greg Oden.

If the Suns run out of cap space, they will be able to offer a 2-year/$5.3M contract under the new exception.

Can't stretch Warrick, only deals signed after the new CBA can be stretched.
