The teams with the most English top-flight league titles
Liverpool are champions of England again after winning the Premier League title in 2024/25.
Arne Slot’s side confirmed their status as champions on Sunday, with celebrations in full swing on Merseyside. It’s just a second league title in the Premier League era but a record-equalling crown in terms of English top-flight titles.
We’ve ranked the teams with the most English top-flight titles to see where the most successful clubs in history rank alongside the Reds.
The teams with the most English top-flight titles
5. Everton – 9
Everton are nine-time champions of England, with just four teams having won the title on more occasions than the Toffees. Inaugural members of the Football League, Everton won their first title during the third season of the competition after finishing above Preston North End during the 1889/90 season.
Five of Everton’s title triumphs came before the Second World War in 1939, before the Blues added further successes in 1963 and 1970. Everton then won two titles in three seasons under Howard Kendall in the 1980s. The Toffees battled rivals Liverpool for the championship and came out on top in 1985 and 1987. The first of those titles came alongside the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
4. Manchester City – 10
Manchester City have won the top-flight title 10 times, with eight of those successes coming in the Premier League era. The Citizens won titles in 1938 and 1968, the latter seeing City pip a Manchester United side that won the European Cup to the championship.
City endured a 44 year drought before next lifting the title in 2012. After Sheikh Mansour’s transformative takeover catapulted the Citizens into the financial elite, a last-gasp Sergio Aguero goal against QPR snatched the title from rivals Manchester United in the final seconds of the season.
City won another league title in 2013/14, before the arrival of Pep Guardiola took the club to new heights. Under the Spaniard, City became the first English team to reach 100 points in a league season (2017/18), the first to win the domestic treble (2018/19) and the first to win four consecutive top-flight titles (2021-2024).
3. Arsenal – 13
Arsenal established themselves as a powerhouse of English football in the 1930s, as the Gunners won five league titles during the decade.
The North Londoners hold the record for the longest unbroken top-flight streak, having been relegated just once in 1913. Arsenal also ended the 20th century with the highest average league position and hold the joint-record for the most league and FA Cup doubles (3), alongside Manchester United.
Arsenal have won three league titles during the Premier League era, with their most recent a record-breaking success in 2003/04. Arsene Wenger’s side became the first team in 115 years to complete an entire top-flight campaign without defeat.
=1. Manchester United – 20
Manchester United have the joint-most title successes, despite their title drought stretching to 12 years this season.
Sir Matt Busby helped establish Manchester United as a giant with five titles during the 1950s and 1960s, alongside England’s first European Cup in 1968. A 26-year barren run followed, until an unprecedented period of dominance under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ferguson led Manchester United to the Premier League title in the rebranded league’s inaugural season and retired with 13 top-flight titles. Incredibly, Ryan Giggs played in all 13 title-winning teams to become the most decorated footballer in British football history.
=1. Liverpool – 20
Ferguson famously declared his intention to “knock Liverpool off their f***ing perch”, and the Scot succeeded – but the Merseysiders have now caught back up.
Two title wins in the last five seasons have moved Liverpool level with Manchester United for top-flight titles, while the Reds boast more Champions League crowns and overall trophies than their Mancunian rivals.
Bill Shankly started Liverpool’s rise to a winning machine, before the club won 11 titles in just 18 seasons between 1973 and 1990. Few envisioned the following drought as the Premier League era began, with Liverpool taking 30 years to claim their next crown.
Jurgen Klopp led Liverpool to that success in 2019/10, before Arne Slot wrapped up title number 20 this season.
