First they passed on Reggie Bush and Vince Young. Now this. Add in their dozens of horrid free agent deals over the years (Morlon Greenwood, Todd Wade, Robaire Smith, Anthony Weaver, Eric Moulds, on and on and on) and I'm starting to get the feeling that the engine is running but no one's in the driver's seat there.

Houston is starting to make the 1980s Cardinals look well-managed in comparison.

Well, maybe they are operating under the assumption, would we rather pay Matt Schaub that kind of money, than trade up and pay that same kind of money to Russell/Quinn for an unknown product. You can debate Schaub's is a relative unknown as well.

I agree though, they probably would have used just as many draft picks, money to move up to the #2 spot and take one of the two QB's or Peterson, etc. If they were planning on using draft picks to aquire players, the fan favorite thing to do would have been to move up in the draft.

Is he going to have to work for that 48 Mill via incentives or escalators? Is it full of roster bonuses where he will have to actually be on the team in the future to get the money. And so on.

All that has to be answered before it can be bashed.

6 years 48 Mill doesnt mean he will actually see 6 years 48 Mill. He could be there all 6 years and still not see the whole 48 Mill.

Great thread title, but this isn't totally fair. 2004's 1st rounder Dunta Robinson was a RoY. Man, what a mess the draft has been for this franchise. How do they even field enough players to play every week? How did we lose to this team two years ago?

There are a number of baseball teams that will continually confound the experts on how they can stretch the dollar and always put a competitive team on the field and not mortgage the team...not so many in football.

Ya' gotta' tip your cap to the guys that run the Twins, A's and even my beloved St. Louis Cardinals (although they do spend a bit), the way they conduct business and manage to play excellent ball. Realize that a number of years ago they was talk about folding the Twins.

A quick off topic diversion: I wouldnt put the Cardinals in the same category as the Twins--

the Cardinals have picked up players who wouldnt otherwise be available for what they gave up if it werent for their large contracts (Rolen, Edmunds, etc). The Cardinals spending isnt Yankees or Redsox, but its alot closer to those guys than it is to the Twins.

And I grew up a baseball Cardinal fan.

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans have signed restricted free-agent QB Matt Schaub to a six-year contract worth $48 million with $7 million guaranteed. Schaub will receive $20 million in the first three years. If Schaub stays with the team the last three years of the contract, the Texans will have to pay Schaub a $10 million option bonus in 2010. The Texans paid QB David Carr an $8 million option in 2006 to keep him for the last three years of his contract.

This deal, with only $7 million in guarantees, is one of the more sane amounts this offseason. Word is picking up that Carr may be heading to Oakland or elsewhere soon. Who knows--you know what's going to happen, though. In his first game with his new team he'll throw for 600 yards and 10 TDs.

He's barely played an entire GAME let alone an entire season.

If he was a high draft pick QB, the deal would have been much bigger for a lessor known rookie. Schaub hasn't played much but has been in a pro system for awhile now and there is plenty of film on him during exibition season. Only 7 Million up front, this guy is a bargain.

This isnt a bad move at all. Sure the contract looks bad, but only 7 mil guaranteed is nice. Keep in mind that Schaub is a free agent next season if this deal is not done. Could you imagine the how big of a disater this deal might have become if Schaub left Houston at the end of the season?

Difference is Delhomme was signed as a free agent, they didn't give up draft picks for him.
