The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Release Date: December 14, 2005 (Academy run; limited release: February 3, 2006)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
Director: Tommy Lee Jones
Screenwriter:Guillermo Arriaga
Genre:Drama
MPAA Rating: R (for language, violence and sexuality)
Website: The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

Starring: Tommy Lee Jones, Barry Pepper, Julio César Cedillo, January Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Levon Helm, Melissa Leo, Vanessa Bauche

Plot Summary: The actor-director plays the role of Pete Perkins, foreman of a Texas ranch. His best friend, Melquiades, a "*******," is found dead in the middle of the desert. Because the local police have no plans to pursue his murderer, Melquiades is given a summary burial. But Pete decides to investigate the crime himself. He eventually catches the culprit and forces him to dig up Melquiades's body and take it to his native village in Mexico, to give him a burial worthy of the name.

Jones, who worked with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, who did the screenplay for 21 Grams, describes how the project was born: "I wanted essentially to make a study in social contrast between the land that's south of the Rio Grande River and the land that's north of it. I wanted to understand how things are the same, and how they're different, how they're in and out of human control, what ironies might exist there, what injustices, what glory, beauty and redemption you can find in this area that has its own character, its own quality, something that cannot be imposed, something that has grown, and evolved, something that cannot be controlled."

I saw yesterday this great road-movie.

Screenplay by Arriaga is almost perfect, in the same vein as 21grams, acting is really good (especially Tommy Lee Jones, who's really deserving his price in Cannes) and Jones basically made an excellent first movie, directing his crew the best way possible

I just picked this up from the library. It currently has a 7.7 rating at IMDB. I haven’t seen Barry Pepper in a movie for about 4 years. I really enjoy his acting, so I’m looking forward to seeing this.

I saw it, on high recommendations...

It was pretty slow for me...either I was tired, or I dunno, but I fast forwarded a lot of it...and I never do that.

I just watched it. It was pretty slow, but if you have time to sit down and put yourself into the shoes of each of the characters, it turns out to be pretty interesting. Roger Maris, I mean Barry Pepper, was great in this.

I really liked this flick. TLJ was great.

I do have a question for you, though: Why do you think the townsfolk either did't know Mel or acted like they didn't, why did he lie about the town name, and what was the third burial (he was buried in texas and then again in Mexico)?

I have some theories/interpretations, but I also wonder if I just missed something obvious... I was on Percocet when I watched it.

For some reason this movie has been pretty much purged from my memory.

The writers had to try way too hard to make the BP guy the bad guy. They had to make him a real bastard and an abuser and what not. Outside of trying to coverup his shooting of Mel (and the aforementioned efforts to make him unlikeable) he did nothing wrong. All he had to do is report what happened to the authorities. Accidental shooting. He would not have been convicted of anything.

Like I said, had they not painted him as a real creep, he'd be as big of a victim as Mel IMO.

And if TLJ's character could fly, they wouldn't have had to ride a horse to mexico.

You make it sound like it's a true story. They "painted" him a creep, because his character was a creep.

The whole movie was just trying to portray the BP as the bad guys and the poor innocent illegal immigrants the good guys. The only way to make that work was to make the agent a despicable person. We're supposed to hate him for him shooting Mel, but IMO that was not his fault. They had to portray him as an ass in his personal life (that had virtually nada to do with the story) to make us dislike him. The whole way through the movie I felt worse for the agent than anyone else.

TLJ character deserves to be in jail, and the BP agent deserved to be fired. Nothing more.

Explain it to me then...
I didn't see it as a comment on illegal immigration.

I saw it as a film about enduring friendship and ultimately the imperfections of both TLJ and Mel and how TLJ reconciles those imperfections in his own mind.

I can see that. I just didn't like that fact that absolutely none of the characters were likeable. I really didn't feel for anyone in this picture.
