Plot Summary: The actor-director plays the role of Pete Perkins, foreman of a Texas ranch. His best friend, Melquiades, a "*******," is found dead in the middle of the desert. Because the local police have no plans to pursue his murderer, Melquiades is given a summary burial. But Pete decides to investigate the crime himself. He eventually catches the culprit and forces him to dig up Melquiades's body and take it to his native village in Mexico, to give him a burial worthy of the name.
Jones, who worked with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, who did the screenplay for 21 Grams, describes how the project was born: "I wanted essentially to make a study in social contrast between the land that's south of the Rio Grande River and the land that's north of it. I wanted to understand how things are the same, and how they're different, how they're in and out of human control, what ironies might exist there, what injustices, what glory, beauty and redemption you can find in this area that has its own character, its own quality, something that cannot be imposed, something that has grown, and evolved, something that cannot be controlled."
I saw yesterday this great road-movie.
Screenplay by Arriaga is almost perfect, in the same vein as 21grams, acting is really good (especially Tommy Lee Jones, who's really deserving his price in Cannes) and Jones basically made an excellent first movie, directing his crew the best way possible
