Wow.

Well, I guess this was not the weekend to take off. I will say it one more time.

WOW!

For all those whose hearts are not situated in their collective stomach, repeat "In Whiz we trust" 10 times and go get a cocktail. My trust is still here, my belief in this TEAM is still here, but I cannot help myself in saying that things feel like 1998 all over again. Graves gets two slaps on the back for a job well done in at least TRYING to keep Dansby or Rolle. At least we tried to keep players and just didn't let them walk out the door this time. Also, at the prices that Rolle and Dansby went for it might be a blessing, especially with Rolle. Graves and company get a handshake for bringing in Kerry Rhodes whom I will be very interested in seeing play for the Cardinals and to see if he will improve upon what I have seen in the past.

Now Graves get a huge, WWE style, bitch-slap to his face. QUICK! QUICK! Some one call security and pull Rugbymuffin off of Mr. Graves' throat !!!!!

Yes, the move makes sense. Everyone has said "It was time." and I agree to a point. My only point against the situation is that this is ANQUAN BOLDIN. Sorry, like it or not many fans have a deep rooted emotional attachment to the guy. For 3 or 4 season it was the Anquan Boldin show and that was it. There was nothing else going on in Arizona, and Boldin was supplying all the football to watch for the Cardinals. He played like a caged animal for this team even when the team was going 4-12. Never gave up and never let the constant contract/front office B.S. effect his play on the field. The laundry list of big plays, big catches, and great moments are hard to let go of.

From the moment he got here:
http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/vb/f43/i-hear-a-lot-about-11094.html

we all loved the guy, and the respect he brought to the franchise. After years upon years of playing hard Anquan said this of the Arizona Cardinal fans:

"The fans have been nothing but supportive and I'm thankful for that," Boldin said of Cardinals fans. "I've tried to play my heart out for them."

I personally felt he did play his heart out for the fans and this team.

Boldin said his best memory in Arizona was the Super Bowl XLIII. "To go from what we did in '03 (4-12), my rookie year, to the pinnacle last year, it's definitely been a blessing and that's what I'm most proud of. When I first got out here, that was my main goal, was to change this organization to a winning organization, one that was respected around the league. And leaving here now, I think I've done that."

Mission accomplished. The Cardinals are definitely better now then where this club was when he arrived.

Boldin agreed with coach Ken Whisenhunt's opinion that the timing of the trade was good for all parties. "I think change is necessary for everybody in life," Boldin said. "In order for you to grow, sometimes there has to be change, even though sometimes it's unwanted."

As everyone involved keeps saying, "It was time." Yet, the emotional side of me really says the right thing to have done, was to pay the man, and keep him in the desert where he belongs. He was "The Big Bang" were everything that is now good about the Cardinals started, IMO. It was Boldin on offense and Wilson on defense, and the team was built around them. Not to mention from what I read, the amount Boldin signed for in Baltimore was most certainly "do-able" from the Cardinals perspective but burnt bridges made it an impossible situation. Which sux, and that gives me reason to have contempt towards the front office. So, while I understand, and whlie I think it will be best for the team's future. Still.........

Anquan Boldin is gone.........

Much respect to Mr. Anquan Boldin. I will miss watching you play for the Cardinals. Thank you for all the hard work and effort you put towards making this team a respectful NFL franchise. Congratulations on your new contract that you more than deserve, and good luck to you with the Ravens. I will be turning in to watch as long as the Cardinals game is not on.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the rest of the goings on there is no two ways about it. The Cardinals took a HUGE hit to the talent department this weekend. This team is not as good as it once was on offense because Anquan Boldin is gone. No two ways about it. We just got rid of an perennial All-pro, 1,000 yard, 3rd down specialist WR and while I have an astronomical amount of respect for Steve Breaston he is a far cry from Anquan Boldin and Early Doucet still has a lot to prove. So, right now on offense we took a major blow to our run blocking, 3rd down packages, passing game, leadership, and receiving core.

On defense the blow is just as bad, but is has taken the loss of two players to equal the damage. Karlos Dansby is gone to Miami for an outrageious amount of money. Losing Dansby hurts because there is nothing here in Arizona to replace him. Not only his ILB skill, but his coverage skills and ability to work with Adrian Wilson, and disguise blitzes and coverages. But, alas, the Cardinals tried to keep Dansby, and at some point what was best for the team was to let Dansby walk. Antrel Rolle was also loss, and I could care less. Rolle is now the highest paid safety in the league, and talent wise is probably the the 40th best safety in the league talent wise. Talent = physical AND mental skill.

So, now stop and take a deep breath.

The winds have shifted, the tide has changed.

So, Michael Bidwill, Rod Graves, and Mr. Ken Whisenhunt,

WHAT ARE YOU PREPARED TO DO ?

You have the 1998 fiasco fresh in your mind. Cause if you don't think this front office is not thinking about that time in their history right now you have another thing coming.

You just lost three all-pro players (regardless, in name they all are), lost you captain on defense, lost your "heart and soul" on offense and in the locker room, and lost your starting free safety. Kudos, for fighting the good fight and trying to keep two out of the three, but you failed in doing so.

What are you prepared to do ? Are you going to be the "Same Ol' Cardinals"? Are we going back to another decade of double digit loss seasons?

Well, he fans have come to your new stadium, and packed it full game after game. You told us all that you needed stadium in order to field a competitive team. You told us that things are changing in the desert.

Well, it is put up or shut up time. What is done is done, and players lost are players lost.

What are you going to do ? If ever there was a time to prove that this franchise in Arizona is NOT the "Same ol' Cardinals" it is now. No excuses anymore, no more "well, Kurt Warner is the ONLY reason the Cardinals were good.", and no more "well, it was mostly Denny Green's players that have them competing."

It is a blank slate on the beginning of the new chapter for this franchise. Will the Cardinals decide on sustaining their competitiveness or will they slink back to the darkness, dealing with losing seasons, inferior talent, and a label of "Cheap" plastered across the front of the stadium in the desert?

I do not know what the future holds. I know I trust in Whiz. I know that I believe in a lot of the talent on this current roster.

Extending Whiz was a great start.

Trading for Kerry Rhodes was a nice gesture.

But, the line is in the sand. There is still work to be done, major holes to fill, and a draft that will be HUGE for this organization.

Scary, exciting, and confusing times to be a Cardinals fan.

For today.....I just miss Anquan Boldin

RM, that was an excellent and even-handed treatment of the "State of the Cardinals". Really summed it up well.

Muffin, thanks for this wonderful piece. It is one of your very best. I will treasure Q, (and this piece), among the memories that I take with me forever. I believe you have read the collective mind of the Cardinals Fan.
