I was really looking forward to this one. It didn't disappoint. Engaging, great characters, great story, great action, great acting, great directing. Really well done. So seamless I didn't even take note of the long running time, even though I was aware of it going in. The best part is, it's inspired by true historical happenings. Only loosely inspired, it seems, but still.

It's been getting roasted on twitter today. #BoycottWomanKing has been trending all day. From what I can tell it's coming mainly from black users saying that the movie glamorizes and downplays the Dahomey role in the slave trade. Lots of videos and articles posted on the tribe's history with comments like "These are the people that sold us."

I haven't seen it yet so I can't speak to the movie's accuracy yet. I'm curious to hear from people that have seen it on how it accurate it is. Most of the posters haven't seen it and are mainly going by word of mouth on what they've heard about it.

I'll put what I know in spoilers, but as for the history, yes, Dahomey was certainly part of the slave trade. The spoilers also spoil what happens in the movie.

In the movie, the present king of the Dahomey ends up getting rid of the slave trade. When I looked it up, I discovered that this fast-forwarded the timeline of Dahomey quitting the slave trade by about 30 years. There was also the dramatic attack/burning of an Oyo/White slaver port city, which I can't say if it was at all accurate.
