PHOENIX – Freddy Peralta and Joey Ortiz were thinking the same thing Friday night at American Family Fields of Phoenix.
Flush it.
On a night in Maryvale where pigs may as well have flown, Peralta and Corbin Burnes, a pair of all-star arms, combined to allow 19 hits and 18 runs in a game that Arizona ultimately won, 16-9 — and that wasn’t even the most unexpected thing that took place in front of the sellout crowd of 9,597.
That honor, if you want to call it that, belonged to Ortiz.
In the top of the fourth inning Ortiz sprinted off the field during the middle of an at-bat and straight into the restroom located in the Brewers’ dugout. It cost Ortiz the ability to play the rest of the game – there aren’t reentries for position players, even in spring – and likely some cash in an upcoming kangaroo court.

"He had to poop," the Brewers manager said.
It wasn’t apparent what Ortiz’s issue was at first, but after he put his glove over his face and said something to associate manager Rickie Weeks, nobody could conceal a smile on their face.
“It was weird,” Peralta said. “I was like, ‘What is he doing?’ And as soon as he came back and put his glove (up) I was like, ‘S—.”
Peralta had a problem with runs, too, allowing 10 of them in his final tuneup before taking the ball on opening day next Thursday at Yankee Stadium. He gave up a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno taking him deep, then allowed four runs in the fourth and another two in the fifth before being removed.
The right-hander was still in light spirits after the outing.
“I got some work from the stretch today,” he cracked.
Peralta did ultimately get the work that he needed, completing five “up-downs” before exiting. He’s ready to move onto the game where the results actually matter starting in six days.
“I know myself,” Peralta said. “I know that during the season – I’m not going to say that’s not going to happen, but that’s probably the lowest I get with all those runs. Because there’s a different feeling during the game. Everything goes differently.”
By the time all was said and done — 25 runs, 32 hits, 16 walks and four errors later — in the three hour, 40 minute affair, there sat Ortiz on the top step of the dugout, a self-imposed punishment for having to leave the game early.
The Brewers frustrated Burnes, their former teammate and 2021 Cy Young Award winner, by running wild, bunting and driving the ball into the gaps with aplomb. Burnes recorded just six outs and gave up 11 hits, eight runs (seven earned) while making a throwing error on a pickoff attempt.
William Contreras finished the day 4 for 4 and had three hits off Burnes, who was a hard-contact magnet until being pulled during the fourth inning. Jackson Chourio had two hits, boosting his spring average to .477, and Caleb Durbin bunted for a single, drove in a run with a double and stole two bases against Burnes.
But it wasn’t any of that damage against him that had Burnes riled up at Durbin walking off the mound in the third inning. After Durbin swung and missed at a pitch in the dirt for strike three, he took a path to first that included a few steps on the grass in foul territory. That led to him glancing the right side of Arizona first baseman Pavin Smith, who secured the out and remained on the bag.
As Burnes walked off the mound, he yelled back in the direction of Durbin and the Brewers dugout.
"I think they were upset at Durbin's route," manager Pat Murphy said. "It's a spring training game and I think Durbin is playing the game the only way he knows how to play it. Sometimes that can be interpreted a certain way. I think if I was on the other side, especially when a guy ends up being hit by the ball and whatever, and there's a potential injury -- it's a learning experience for Durbin."
After throwing a Cactus League outing Sunday, Brandon Woodruff took his work to the backfields for a pair of innings in a minor-league game on Friday.
Woodruff allowed a home run in the first inning and reached 95 mph as he ultimately achieved his goal of two innings.
Next up for Woodruff is an extended bullpen – likely of three “up-downs” – with the Brewers in New York. He will then throw an extended simulated game in Milwaukee the second week of the season.
