I just got this from RealGM...

Cavs could be fined, forced to give up draft picks because of Boozer

The six-year, $68 million offer sheet presented to Carlos Boozer by the Utah Jazz may do more than just leave the Cavaliers empty-handed.

It could literally cost them.

That's if the allegations are true that Boozer and the Cavs made an oral agreement before the two-week negotiating period that started July 1, a violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement. If so, the Cavs could be fined, forced to give up draft picks and any team personnel involved suspended

The league office has reserved comment, so right now it appears the Cavs could escape any penalties and Boozer will move on.

Man... this could have been like the Joe Smith fiasco all over again

I wonder if the Cavs were forced to give up draft picks that means that the Bobcat automatically gets their pick in next years draft?

The article also said that this incident will have a effect on future negotiations by getting rid of the 13 days waiting period

I hope they lose the pick, this is just like joe smith all over again, just a little different, joe smith signed a paper, but boozer gave paxson his word with a handshake.

It all depends when the verbal agreement was intiated, if it was before July 1st then there is a problem if it was after July 1st then there was no violation from what I have read.

I doubt that the Cavaliers will be penalized (further). There would have been no reason to have any discussions before July 1st. And even if they did, it obviously wasn't much of an "agreement," if Boozer felt free to walk away from it.

I agree with elind....I also think it would be very difficult to prove an oral agreement existed since booz jumped ship without looking back.

How is this situation similiar to what happened in Minnesota?

Minnesota had agreements with a player not listed on the contract. These verbal aggreements were not on the contract submitted to the NBA.

Did Cleveland submit a contract to the NBA for review which did not include additional moneys based on a verbal agreement between the player and courting team?
