Just when you thought things couldn't get worse, KTAR is reporting Curt Schilling has two fractured bones in his hand. They don't know how long he'll be out, but we're probably looking at a minimum of 3 weeks. A press conference at BOB will be underway soon, so we should know more then.

Might as well bring up the whole, damn SideWinder squad.

This is getting ridiculous.

Schilling has broken hand

Associated Press
June 3, 2003

PHOENIX – Arizona Diamondbacks ace Curt Schilling has a broken right hand, another in a string of injuries for the two-time defending NL West champions.

Schilling was injured when he was hit in the hand twice last Friday in San Diego. He stayed in the game after Ramon Vazquez's comebacker hit him on the index finger on the opening pitch, but left the game after Sean Burroughs' line drive hit him on the back of the right hand with two outs in the seventh inning.

X-rays after the game were negative and trainer Paul Lessard was confident there were no broken bones, but a precautionary MRI was taken Tuesday. It uncovered a hairline fracture and a bone chip in the third and fourth metacarples.

There was no immediate estimate of how long Schilling will be sidelined.

He joins fellow ace Randy Johnson and a crowd of other Diamondbacks on the disabled list. Johnson had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and isn't due back for at least three weeks.

Schilling is 4-3 with a 3.04 ERA. On Tuesday, he was fined about $15,000 by major league baseball for smashing a machine that monitors umpires.

The team brought up left-hander Chris Capuano from Triple-A Tucson to take over Schilling's scheduled start Wednesday.

Among others on Arizona's 15-day disabled list are closer Matt Mantei, setup man Mike Koplove, rookie starter Brandon Webb and infielder Craig Counsell.

In addition, outfielder David Dellucci is still recovering from a concussion, a cut tongue, swollen jaw and sore lower back as the result of a collision with infielder Alex Cintron on Sunday. Cintron also is hurting with a tight left hamstring.

Last week, the team traded starter Byung-Hyun Kim to Boston for third baseman Shea Hillenbrand.

OK - any hope on my part for this season just flew right out the window.

So much for the "New Season" that Traber and Thom kept trying to push on us. Not that having him healthy would of mattered, going 2-2 vs the Pads is just horrible. Out of our origional 5 man rotation the only person who hasnt missed time because of injury and suspension is our worst pitcher, Elmer.

The good news is that the fractures didn't show up on x-ray, meaning that NO bones are displaced. The bad news is that depending on the size of the bone chip it may still need surgery.

Dr.DRVNFAST's prognosis is 5-6 weeks, back with the team after a minor league appearance in week seven.

The D'Backs #1 starter is now Elmer Dessens??

...sigh...

I was holding out a little hope for this season, but that has now been replaced by optimism for the future, and today's draft helps a lot. What a horrible break for AZ (no pun intended) - I wonder if this might be the proverbial white flag to management? Regardless of how many games are remaining, losing Unit & Schill for at least three more weeks is probably just a bit much to overcome.

*extended sigh*

Back just in time for that push when they're 18 games from the Wild Card spot.:(

This totally sucks - Curt gone now too.

But, never say never. As long as the team doesn't give up hope, I won't either!!
