This team isn't deficient in talent; nor is it lacking in effort or heart. It's a more physical team than I can remember and it seems to feel pretty good about itself compared to other seasons.

That's why they aren't the "same old Cardinals."

But here's one reason they still are - Mistakes.

Without boring you with all the specific miscues, I'd like to see Coach W and his team spend the next 13 days cleaning up the following:

- Kickoff coverage (On that one long return, you could see nearly all our guys peeling left away from the direction of the wedge. The wedge literally had thin air to block).

- Coach to QB Communication - Two "delay of game calls on Warner. (One occurred at the start of the quarter - Kurt and Ken had plenty of time on the sideline between quarters to determine the play).

- Downfield Blocking by Receivers & TE's - It's not that Fitz and Pope aren't willing to block, it's that they don't do it very well and wind up with holding calls.

- Ball Protection - Kurt's brace notwithstanding, we're not going to win many games where we cough up the ball and the other guys run it in for a TD. If it means Warner has to curl up in the fetal position a second earlier, it may not look pretty but it might save a game or two.

- Field Goal and XP Accuracy - If Neil has a head problem, he should visit a shrink (as often as he needs to). And if kicking 100 consecutive successful FG's in practice isn't improving his game-day percentage, maybe he should up that number to 500 - if that's what it takes.

And whether his holder is Barr, Morey or anyone else - he should be out there with Neil for all 500 (or more) practice snaps until bothof them can do it blindfolded.

(Note - Fitzy tends to "challenge the refs" a little by stretching out the ball when he thinks his knee is on the ground. Problem is: the officials don't always see it that way, and he's been burnt at least once. If he's going to continue doing it, he must learn to be a bit more careful).

Here's the deal: For every big play our guys make, there's another play where we screw things up. (Bzzzzz!!!!) Not good enough - getting it right 50% of the time makes us a .500 football team.

Cut our mistakes in half and we'd approach .750.

Until then, the mistakes this team continues to make represents a "same old/same old" carry-over. Eliminate or reduce them and perhaps we can finally shed that tiresome label.

On one of these you could see Warner yelling at the sidelines. I suspect the play came in late. But, Warner needs to be aware of the clock and hustle the team to the line and through their reads, at the very least call a TO if he see they can't get it off in time.

Ah hah! Nuke. This is a Bye Week - we have twelve days.

The team likely gets Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday off, if not more. Next Monday, they start perparing for Tampa Bay. That doesnt leave much time to learn the things you should have learned in camp.

that's the biggest problem - regardless if the play's coming in late or not, how the hell does the QB have absolutely ZERO clue how much time is left on the playclock and take that penalty TWICE within the ten yard line? It wasn't even like we snapped it JUST after the playclock died - the play was blown dead as Warner was under center which means he wasn't even paying attention to how much he had.

and there is ZERO excuse for getting a delay of game penalty after a quarter break - that was beyond words pathetic.

Won't they start preparing for Tampa THIS WEEK? Why waste this week not building a rock solid game plan?

It was Rackers' fault.

The coaches likely will, but usually players leave town.

Yep. Also Wiz promised his players a really good bye week if they beat Pitt for him. No one knows what that means yet but it usually means time off.

My list of things to work on -

Penalties - We cannot continue lead the league in penalties and penalty yards and expect to be in a playoff hunt. We have 60 more penalty yards then the 2nd team on the list. Thats how bad we are. We give up 71 yards a game. Dont know how to coach this up better but somethings got to give.

Kickoff coverage and Kickoff returns - We are in the bottom 11 in both categories. There just seems to be something off with the lanes our kickoff coverage units cover and the up front blocking on kickoff returns. Not letting JJ return would help.

Coming out of the tunnel execution and game planning - We have 1 TD in 7 games in the 1st and 3rd quarters. None in the 1st quarter. Something has got to change here. Slow starts on O is killing us. Is it a mindset, gameplan, a combo, or something not yet mentioned?

I agree. The QB has to know how much time is left on the play clock. I'm kind of shocked that a veteran like Warner allowed this to happen twice.

I'm with Joe 100%, without those 3 problems we likely would have 2 more wins(at least).

The pnelaties in particular are killing us...there is no excuse being the #1 most penalized team in the league--sort of throws 2 out of the three things they preach "tough, disciplined & smart".

Man, I'm tired of being right;

From Somer's blog;

Whisenhunt is giving the players some down time this week. They are off on Monday and Tuesday, have a light practice on Wednesday, and then don't have practice until next week.

That's a pretty typical schedule these days in the NFL for a bye week. Some coaches given their players the whole week off.

Pope has become the new Davis. As I recall he has had at least one off sides penalty in every game this year. He also had that problem last year. Let's get that fixed as well !

Well, don't they normally practice in Tempe? SD is going to be practicing, so they won't have a place to practice.

Cardinals practice in the morning on Wednesday, and vacate for the remainder of the week. San Diego will practice later in the day after the Cardinals have finished.

So much for Jeff's plan for the bye week. Unless they had one hell of a practice this morning.

What's the point in getting the Pope fixed, I thought he was supposed to be celibate.

Every team in the NFL is trying to reduce their mistakes. Usually the team with the fewest wins.

All the D's are set up (at least the good ones) to force the other team into breakdowns. Some minor some bigger. That's the key, to keep mistakes minor and avoid bigger ones, but still be aggressive enough to move the ball and stop your opponent.

If a coach could bottle that, he'd have one B/A team.
