Thinking positive: Imagine this defense with a legit outside pass rusher.

I'm as dismayed by this horrible offense as anyone else and it certainly makes sense to project a quarterback with that #1 selection, but it sure is fun to think about the Arizona defense adding that special outside rusher like Jones from Georgia or the kid from Texas A&M.

If Whiz gets canned and they promote Horton to head coach, I would love to see us approach the offseason in this way:

1. Sign Alex Smith-After hearing Smith's interview about being benched, you could hear that he was just seething and felt betrayed by Harbaugh. There is no way they make that work in San Fran after this season. Smith didn't mince his words at all about how angry he was about getting benched.

2. Sign Chris Ivory-I think Ivory could be to the Cards what Micheal Turner was the the Falcons in 2008. Ivory has a bunch left in the tank and is itching to be the guy just like Turner was when he backed up LT in San Diego.

3. Sign the best interior lineman in free agency.

4. Draft one of those top 2 outside pass rushers with the 1st round selection.

5. Draft a guy like Aaron Murray in round #2. Murray made some bigtime throws last night against Alabama.

Demontre Thomas, the kid from A&M, would be the ideal player to add to this defense. He's clearly the #1 pick for me.

- Feel the exact same way about Alex Smith, but if we get him we can probably wait until round 3 for a QB (and address OL in round 2).

- Love Chris Ivory, dude runs angry.

- Love me some Jarvis Jones. Huge motor.

I'd love to see Alex Smith hungry for payback QB a young developing offense and a Horton-coached D hand it to the Niners twice...

Apparently the rumor in UCLA circles is Anthony Barr is probably coming out too. Apparently after the Stanford game Datone Jones made a comment about feeling bad that it was the last chance at a Rose Bowl for guys like him and Barr.

Barr now leads the country in sacks although he's not as polished as the other guys having played 1 season on Defense.

He's apparently projected top 20 in the draft now.

All I keep thinking about is.. Imagine this team, with even a slightly under average QB

Me thinking positive about this defense is me believing we can devote an entire Draft to the offense this year. An entire draft to O-line and a QB, between picks and trades. It could happen. :D

It doesn't require Whiz's departure to get this done. BPA in the first round in the first round could very well be a "D" difference maker.

Draft best available player with 1st pick. Go almost totally OL or QB after that. Free agency, grab what can be had, especially OL, CB, pass rusher.

NO to Alex Smith

I've heard he is graded as a top 75 player ala Ezekiel Ansah. Great talent but teams are a bit leary about the learning curve from college defenses to the pros. Aldon Smith like talent but with less film, less experience and would have to start in a very limited role.

1. Sign Alex Smith-Possibly as a backup. I like Kolb.

2. Sign Chris Ivory- For the right price, I like it.

3. Sign the best interior lineman in free agency. - Draft them. After we take (hopefully) Luke Joeckle or Jake Matthews in the 1st, well have rounds 2-7 to address the rest of the line. In round 2, future Elite G's can be found. Much better than any in FA.

4. Draft one of those top 2 outside pass rushers with the 1st round selection. - Maybe. IMO, we must get Luke Joeckle. Hes a Jake Long/ Joe Thomas calibur talent. Very rare and will be our LT for the next decade. Id love a great pass rusher, but whats the point with this offense? Our D currently should have us as one of the top 5 teams in the NFL. But our Offense (and Oline) are dead last. We must take care of offense.

5. Draft a guy like Aaron Murray in round #2. Murray made some bigtime throws last night against Alabama- and some big time picks. Couldnt disagree more. The kid is garbage. .

Horton to HC is #1. The rest is noted.

No idea but the word on UCLA football boards is they believe he's a first rounder they're just hoping he decides to come back.

He is quite raw but he's getting better so fast it's scary. They're dropping him into coverage, he's scary good chasing down the runners from the backside etc.

But with one year under his belt it's a crapshoot you just have no idea what you're going to get.

I hope he stays but if he does come out I'd love to get him after the first round.

not an ESPN insider but someone said Barr is now top 15 on Kipers big board but I don't know if its this draft or next.

Opinion is all over the place several say they've heard he will stay in school.

If he declares, I'll try to get more thorough report from the scout friend of mine. I didn't even think about him not being able to discuss him since he's a junior and not yet draft elgible.

he doesn't turn 21 until March but he's draft eligible because he's a junior.

I hope he stays, the one big concern for UCLA would be if too many kids do the strike while the iron is hot thing and go pro.

Why I would take Te'O with a high pick I don't see a QB worth a top 8 pick. You either try to move down and get more picks, or you take someone like Manti who improves the run defense.

What we've seen with the run this year IMO is because the offense is so bad the defense is trying to make big plays and gambling. If the offense is better the defense won't be gambling as much.

But if you go BPA it's a guy like Te'O, or a pass rusher in the first round. We have more needs than picks of course.

Speaking of UCLA, I though Jonathan Franklin was a Jr. and so I didn't think too much of his earlier season performances, but when I learned he was a Sr. during the USC game, I started really paying attention. After reviewing his season, I really like his film. He seems to have a good burst, and runs behind his pads through the line which is pretty impressive.

But he hasn't declared, therefore teams cannot comment on them/him.

I like him too and don't understand why he's rated as low as he is, usually in round 4.

I remember suggesting last year that the Cards take a late round flyer on Bryce Brown. Man, he looks good. This year, maybe take a late round flyer on Jonathon Dwyer. Both guys had off field issues but Brown shows what kind of impact they can have.

He's great but he's small, about 195 pounds. he's not a pocket hercules like MJD but he's a terrific college RB so I hope he gets a shot in the NFL. Tough runner doesn't have top end speed. Huge drop in the Stanford game though.

Tough kid he was supposed to be replaced every year by one recruit or another and held them all off.
