You may be wondering how "The Hobbit" can be stretched into an entire trilogy of films -- a plan director Peter Jackson confirmed on Monday. The film version is based on one book, after all.

But Jackson, who Yahoo! Movies recently saw at Comic-Con, foreshadowed Monday's news as he explained that he is drawing upon source material written by J.R.R. Tolkien -- material that was never published in the original book.

"There [are] other parts of the story we want to tell that we haven't had a chance to tell yet," he said.

Not to mention a lot more money to be made......

To quote Han Solo, "...I've got a bad feeling about this....."

I can't imagine Peter Jackson caring about money at this point. He probably wallpapers his house with $1000 bills.

He just loves making these movies and doesn't want to stop. Still probably selfish, but I don't think you can be a good director without a little bit of narcissism. Or, who knows, maybe the studios said they were going to make it with him or without him, and he wanted to protect his legacy. I dunno.

It might be done for money, but Tolkien did have a bunch of material that didn't make it into the actual books. So I'm cautiously optimistic about this. We'll see how the first 2 Hobbit movies are done though.

Just because Tolkien wrote it, doesn't make it "movie-worthy."

I am thinking pretty lame here. I mean, seriously 3 films out of one book? I agree with the cash grab statement. Is there really enough material to get 3 full movies without pissing off the fans at why each film ends where he will end them? There are people out there who thought the first 3 films of Jacksons went to far in terms of length...

I have not read the book in a very long time but I don't recall there being 3 logical places in the books that I would be satisfied in each of the first 2 films ending. I thought stretching the Hobbit into 2 films would be a stretch.

I don't understand all the bitching. Peter Jackson is making three more movies in Middle Earth. Is nobody but me excited about that, regardless of the material??

I am!!!

And correct me if I am wrong, but the material for the third movie is drawn from the appendix/what happened between Bilbo returning from his journey and the beginning of the LOTR - that is 50 years - a lot of material

I just don't know if there's enough material to stretch this to three movies. Even two movies seemed like it might a stretch for The Hobbit. Three seems like there's a real possibility that instead of two pretty tight movies, we're going to get some bloat.

Exactly my point. I mean if the Hobbit had been 2 or 3 books, nobody would be saying anything. I loved the first 3 films and the quality of those films is what made them great.

If there is alot of bloat because of a cash grab or because there is not enough material.....give me the one film or two. I will be much happier.

Except it's not going to be just The Hobbit.

It's not? The impression they are giving is that it is.....but with expanded story. That is the first I have heard of this.
