This draft reminds me of 1999-Holt or Tait for months. Cards really wanted Edgerrin.

This is a really slow time for free agency, draft stuff etc... We have all talked ourselves purple about draft projections and have taken every rumor or innuendo and turned it into something big. But things are about to really heat up in the next week or so and all of this B.S. the prognosticators have been spewing will start to either sink or swim and in many cases will sink.

Remember 4 years ago (January through early April of 1999 to be specific) when everyone had us either taking John Tait OT from Brigham Young or us taking Torry Holt WR from NC State. All indications were that these were the guys the Cards were targeting. These were the guys the Cards had spent tons of time with at the combine, these were the guys that had the entire Cardinal entourage going to visit for their personal workouts.

However, I distinctly remember reading a short blurb in the "whispers" section of the April 2-9 Pro Football Weekly that mentioned that Arizona Cardinal draft personell were spotted snooping around the campus of the University of Miami and that they were reportedly spending a great deal of time watching film of Edgerrin James. The Cardinals who have a history of stealthy type tactics only sent a single scout to the official Miami workout day.

I guess what I am getting at is that January through early April is really just time to speculate for us fans, to make money for draft geeks like Kiper, and to posture and try to hide your intentions if you are a general manager. The real stuff is going to start coming out in the next few weeks. All indications are that the Cards are zeroing in on a defensive stud-Suggs, Newman, Kennedy, Robertson etc...However, you might want to pay special attention to any "whispers" that come out of the workout of Byron Leftwich next week. Whispers and rumors 3 months out from the draft are just garbage, but whispers 2 weeks from the draft sometimes hold some water just as the one in 1999 did. The Cards were ready to snatch up James had he fallen to them at #8 even though they already had a 1000 yard back in Adrian Murrell. Bob Fergeson admitted that James was their guy after the draft and they were ready to take him even if Holt or Tait or Boston were there when they picked.

Actually I think your analogy would work better if you used Leftwich and Suggs in place of Tait and Holt, because those are the 2 guys most of us are talking about and the Cards' target may be a 3rd different player altogether.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were Trufant or Newman. The club has strangely made no move to add a return man or upgrade the secondary.

Upgrading the secondary doesn't mean squat if there's no push rush.

You could be on to something Ed. I posted way back in late December that I believed the Cards might go after Terrence Newman if he were available. I based my theory on two things-Mac's cravings for the Texas corner last year and the fact that the Cards seem to have some connection with Kansas St. since we have drafted 3 players from their in the last 2 years.

Exactly!

Like I have said before I dont care if we had a 100% healthy Charles Woodson and Deon Sanders in his prime. it wouldnt mean squat they would get toasted as well as long as our D-line remains as is!

A CB just cannot cover a WR for 7+ seconds NO WAY!

Yeah, but if we sign Holliday I think they may consider the pass rush "upgraded".

Personally I don't agree, but I'm just saying that the team might feel that way.

You certainly did mention Suggs and Newman before anyone else I saw on this board.

Also, I didn't really stop to consider it, but we have drafted three K-Staters in 2 years. Hmm. Interesting.

You may be right Ed.

I pray that this organization doesnt think that Holliday is the savior for our pass rush if he decides to sign with us.

That would be idiocy for a guy that has never had more than 8 sacks in his career and likely wont finish the season on the active roster!

Let's not forget that Oakland's defense smothered people last year with a pitifully average pass rush, old LBs, and a ton of speed and talent in the secondary.

Holliday + Newman would give us a DECENT d-line and a very talented secondary.

I'm not saying I'd do it this way at all, but if it happens I'm not gonna pull hair out.
