"graves was too upset to comment after the game"

the article implies that graves, bidwill, etc. were not pleased at all with this loss..and they talk about how the bidwills hate getting thumped like this in their old stomping grounds (something I mentioned in Skorps thread on mac, etc.)

Heck ...I think I found a positive in this loss - maybe it was so ugly that ownership and management above the coaching staff may realize that we cannot compete very well in this division with the cornerbacks and defensive line we currently have in place. Maybe next time when players like marco coleman, wilkinson become available we will get out the checkbook....also - when players like alex molden and willie whitehead can be had for not much $$ - maybe we will at least have them out for a visit.

not saying signing all or part of these guys would have won the game for us. But...Rod graves saying ..gee - I cannot go after marco coleman because I would have to cut dennis johnson (he did not say dennis johnson - he said someone - I assume it was DJ) does not hold much water because we would not really have to have cut dennis johnson anyway.

We could have improved the defensive line...not sure what to say about the cornerback situation - except I would have signed molden over mcdaniel - but there was not much available..maybe we will do something this offseason.

What holds less water is saying "We will wait until after week 1 so we don't have to guarantee the contract". The team that was built for Mac et al is the team that likely will cost all of them their jobs.

Funny. I awarded Rod the game ball.

I guess that deserves an explanation.

Best way I can describe the Cardinals (as objectively as possible considering how bad we looked yesterday).

- Well motivated.

- Poorly coached.

- Short on talent.

Forget about the screwups - we were outmatched.

We didn't improve ourselves at CB or DT in the offseason. We still can't rush the passer. And we passed on Suggs (Note - Kudos on drafting Boldin, but we'd have had him anyway).

While Mac & Co. don't deserve to get off the hook for inept coaching and production - I'd be really uncomfortable if Graves and Bidwill were to attempt to make Mac the fall guy.

All they need to do is look in the mirror.

So did the Rams.

Neither Michael Bidwill nor Rod Graves wanted Marmie or Joe Greene back this season but Mac insisted on it, even putting his own job on the line.

I don't know who blinked and can only guess that it was Michael Bidwill's call or Rod Graves' call.

The problem is that Green is not dumb and knows we're not going to be the only team wanting to change coaches. So he won't just jump at the job if we offer it he'll be willing to wait for a better situation. That's the problem we have our reputation precedes us.

What I hope happens is they replace Marmie and Greene, things get better, and mac finally sees if hehas better assistants, he can do HIS job better. Then we wouldn't have to fire Mac at all.

Right now the team just too often isn't ready to play and that's a reflection of preparation by coaches as much as anything.

I think we all can agree a great coach can make a difference. They can make bad teams decent, decent teams above average and above average teams great. Look what Dungy has done in Indy, Mooch has made Detroit competative, and does anybody think Tampa got robbed by giving up two first rounders for a coach?

The trick is that Coach/GM types don't work. Holgren has turned into a great coach once he stopped trying to do personnel. So yes, a great coach can make a difference, but what of the "replacement" coach mentioned would work here without GM duties added? None. That leaves Arizona in a bind.

It would be a shame to see Mac lose his job because of those underneath him. However, aren't the assistant coaches ultimately his responsibility? Just win some ball games and we won't have ot worry about this!!

actually...now that I think about it - alot of the guys under mac were on Tobin's staff also - but for the defensive guys since Mac was the DC - I assume he picked the guys under him... So I guess they are mac's guys..whatever the case - he has taken a liking to them.

Starting to look like Mac may still have his job on the line for them....

Skorp,
Do you think there is a potential that Michael B and Graves might be upset enough to force changes during this season?

You can understand Mac standing up for these guys it is nobel and probably somewhat justified but in the end if you put your job on the line for someone it would help if they deserved that type of loyalty.

I would also wish that Greene and Marmie get fired, things get better, and Mac survives. Don't see it happening it though.

There is certainly blame to go around, but just look at the off season. Our most glaring hole was DLine, primarily DEnd. So the league leader in sacks becomes a free agent and leaves Philadelphia but do we even try? Nope, too much money and he's too old. Emmits young? What about Sam Adams? Marco Coleman? Wilkenson? All individuals have better stats than our whole line when it comes to sacks, Hell, old man Adams has a pass interception for a touchdown. It's the same old Cardinals, don't let signing Shipp fool you too much. The commitment to spend to win is not there. Funny thing is they could have all of the above but Douglass and still been 10 million under the cap.
If Mac didnt' want older veterans because he wants "moldable" youngsters, then thats his fault, but I can't believe he would not liked more help on the Dline.
And while you are firing coaches, how about our OLine coach. Blake had less time that Plummer used to have. That guy was getting killed. If our pass blocking keeps up we'll be to Parsons by the end of the season. The big red line has still not gelled and I'm wondering if it ever will.
