Yeah, when you think about it, wtf would be stupid enough to keep one copy of this proprietary file on one computer. Sounds risky if it's such an important file.

But the kicker was the MS comment. I've got the same copy(legit) of XP running on four computers at home yet MS has never contacted me and wanted to know why.

The first thing that set off an alarm bell to me was saying that somebody stole that laptop to get an exam. There are probably people at Berkeley that cheat, but no one stupid enough to come up with a plan that bad. I would bet that the real culprit was not a student. If I were a criminal and wanted to steal electronics, universities would be a great place to go. There are laptops and lcd projectors everywhere. There is also no way Microsoft would be calling in 15 minutes. You can have an unactivated version for up to 30 days. If he could track the laptop why didn't he get it back?
