This week's Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week award is finally heading back outdoors for some spring action.
Timnath girls track & field's Natalie Washburn took top honors in the Fort Collins area for the week of March 3-8 behind a strong season debut.
Washburn won the girls 800-meter run at Berthoud's Max Marr Invitational last weekend, beating several 5A city standouts en route to the title.
The senior now has six career high school track & field race wins, including back-to-back Colorado Class 2A state titles in the 800.
Even with Timnath moving up to Class 4A this season, the Cubs runner already looks like she'll be a contender for the 800 crown again this spring.
The Cubs' runner finished in 2 minute and 16.74 seconds, less than a second off her PR in the outdoor 800 while shaving over a second off her state-title time from last season. It was also MileSplit's "elite performance" tag, meeting the U.S. second team standard in the event.
Washburn is the fourth Timnath girls athlete to win the award this school year, joining volleyball players Aubrianna Gerdes and Jersey McCollum, plus fellow track and cross country runner Izzy Schimmelpfennig.
She was also voted as the Blue FCU Female Athlete of the Year for the 2023-24 school calendar.
Cubs fans hit the polls hard, earning Washburn the win with a heavy majority of the vote at 77%.
That ultimately propelled her to Athlete of the Week over the other outstanding nominees:
The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees every Monday, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday and the winner named Thursday.
