The National Football League announced today event
information for "NFL KICKOFF LIVE FROM THE NATIONAL
MALL PRESENTED BY PEPSI VANILLA" Thursday, Sept. 4.
AEROSMITH, MARY J. BLIGE, GOOD CHARLOTTE, BRITNEY
SPEARS, joined by thousands of American military
personnel, will perform with activities beginning at
6:00 p.m. (ET) in "NFL KICKOFF LIVE FROM THE NATIONAL
MALL PRESENTED BY PEPSI VANILLA," the NFL's second
annual football and music festival. ARETHA FRANKLIN
will sing the national anthem from The National Mall to
conclude the event. The event will be televised live,
from 8-9:00 PM (ET) on ABC, leading up to the season
opener between the Washington Redskins and the New York
Jets at FedEx Field (ABC, 9:00 PM ET).
In addition to saluting American military members as
part of the Department of Defense's "Operation Tribute
to Freedom" program, the NFL is partnering with the
U.S. Department of the Interior's Take Pride In America initiative to encourage volunteerism on America's public lands.

"The National Park Service is proud to manage special
places, such as the National Mall in Washington, DC.
The National Mall has served as the backdrop for many
large special events such as the NFL Kickoff next week.
We welcome everyone to the National Mall for these
events, especially the troops who served our nation in Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as the public, the entertainers, the national television audience, and the NFL who selected the location for these events," said National Park Service Director Fran Mainella.
"The NFL Kickoff is a wonderful opportunity to showcase
public service by volunteers who help to protect our
natural resources," said U.S. Secretary of the Interior
Gale Norton.
Take Pride In America, a national partnership, empowers volunteers from every corner of America to enhance our parks, refuges, recreation areas and cultural and historic sites. Outstanding volunteer efforts are rewarded with presidential recognition. Take Pride is part of President's Bush's USA Freedom Corps, dedicated to fostering a culture of service to others.

ACCEPTED ITEMS
To ensure public safety and security, all coolers,
backpacks, packages and persons will be subject to
inspection.
The public is encouraged to plan ahead and to allow
adequate time to pass through security checkpoints
before activities begin.

Fireworks S All chairs S Tents of any kind S No

SECURITY CHECKPOINTS Four security checkpoints and
entry points for the public will be established at the following locations: S two located on the East curb of 14th Street between Madison and Jefferson Drives S one located on 12th Street south of Constitution Avenue, NW S one located on 12th Street north of Independence Avenue, SW
ENTRY TIME The National Mall will be closed to all
pedestrians Sept. 4 between 3rd and 14th Streets from
Noon-3:30 p.m. Attendees may begin entering the
checkpoints at 3:30 p.m.
ROAD CLOSURES S Madison and Jefferson Drives will be
closed to vehicular traffic between 3rd Street and 14th
Street beginning at 6 a.m. Sept. 4 and will remain
closed until midnight. S 4th Street closes 7 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 29 and opens 7 a.m. on Sept. 6 S 7th
Street closes 10 a.m. and opens 10 p.m. on Sept. 4
TRANSPORTATION There will be NO public parking.
Everyone is encouraged to use Metro and other forms of
public transportation.
The Smithsonian Metro stop will remain open. However,
riders will exit on Independence Avenue and cannot exit directly onto The National Mall.
Commuters may call (202) 637-7000 or log onto www.metroopensdoors.com. A Walking Guide is available online. In addition, Metro representatives will be available at the Smithsonian station to assist the public.
