The Detroit Tigers snared the last remaining premiere free agent of the offseason, agreeing to a $75 million, five-year contract with outfielder Magglio Ordonez, a baseball source said Saturday.

Ordonez's deal could be worth up to $105 million over seven seasons, the source told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

Under the complicated deal, Detroit would have the right to void the contract after the 2005 season if Ordonez has a reoccurrence of the left knee injury that hampered his production with the Chicago White Sox for most of last year and the reoccurrence lands him on the disabled list for 25 days or more

I agree, this is a horrible sign for the Tigers. How did Boras get this contract for this guy? He hasnt proved he is healthy, and even healthy he isnt worth that type of money. Dont get me wrong, he is a good player, but that is just too much for pretty much anybody in the league right now.

Is there some kind of weird competition for worst FA-signing of 2004/2005 offseason, do you think? At least they have a medical escape clause, but makes you think they were so thrilled with Pudge that they welcomed Boras with open arms/wallet. How does Boras DO this?

I think Pudge is great - and maybe, if healthy, Mags will be, too, and that might be why Detroit put a boatload of bucks out for him when everyone else backed away at warp speed. It's just that Boras continually amazes me.

How could they not be pleased with Pudge?

Agree. Pudge is one of the top catchers in the league. He was a major reason why the Marlins won the World Series and Detroit had a big turnaround last year.

Then from the "Steroids" thread:
In "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big," Jose Canseco claims he personally injected some of the biggest names in baseball - including All-Stars Rafael Palmeiro, Juan Gonzalez and Ivan Rodriguez, among others - with performance-enhancing drugs.
Pudge seemed good enough to make it on his own.

Yeah, I just posted the steroid article on a different thread but he brings a lot more to a team than his offense, like his defense and handling of pithers.

Worse case, if Ordonez is still 'not right' the Tigers are out $12.0 million on a one year deal. Best case for the Tigers, he is healthy and helps out the way Pudge did.

Well, Bobby Higginson - and his $8.9 million salary - is as good as gone with this signing. Isn't that addition by subtraction at this point?
