n softball program has some big goals for the upcoming season.
With a good group coming back from 19-win season a year ago, the Tigers are aiming to accomplish some big things this year.
“This is the final year of the Sagamore Conference and we want to finish at the top,” Lebanon head coach Robert Archambeau said. “We have a brand new sectional too, so I want to reach the championship and give ourselves a chance to win the sectional. We wish Tri-West the best of luck in 4A and Western Boone the best of luck in 2A, but with us, Danville, Guerin, Brebeuf, Frankfort and Crawfordsville – we have a good mix with teams that are growing. We have the potential to do great things and our girls have the right mindset and the ability to do so.”
The Tigers will officially start their season on Monday after having two weeks of official practice under their belts.
Archambeau said practices have been good so far as they get ready for the opener.
“This is the grittiest, most energetic and fun team that I’ve worked with in a long time,” Archambeau said. “They are very focused on softball and we are simplified, making sure we’re doing the basics the correct way. We’re game focused and are really just focused on our core initiatives – that we compete, we make memories and have fun.”
Archambeau said he has also been impressed with his leadership group so far in practice and said the Tigers have leaders in all classes.
“We have a captain group, because we like not just leaders for this year, but for future years,” he said. “Krryn Miller and Hannah Wilborn are our senior captains and then we have MacKenzie Carey, Sophie Robison and Miley Wilhoite. Those five have really done a great job of pushing our girls in the right way to be competitive, open minded and flexible.”
The Tigers return all their top stat leaders from a season ago.
MacKenzie Carey returns after hitting .486 a year ago with 32 runs scored and 18 RBIs.
Addy Zell hit .411 with 28 runs scored and a team-best 11 doubles and 30 RBIs, and Krryn Miller hit .394 with a team-best five home runs and 36 runs scored.
Sophie Robison batted .372 with 25 runs scored and 26 RBIs, with Hannah Wilborn hitting .346 with 20 runs scored and 21 RBIs. Morgan Stofer (.297) and Piper Sharkey (.295) were also near .300 hitters with at least 50 at bats.
In the circle, they return Miller, who struck out 101 in 133 innings a year ago. Miley Wilhoite struck out 42 in 64 innings.
“Our team has a higher IQ than in year’s past, so we are going to use that to our advantage,” Archambeau said. “I want to be smart and aggressive on the base paths, and really smart in the circle. I think we have an opportunity to do some big things, but we are going to stay humble, under promise and over deliver and be in a position to compete with anybody. Any team can win on any day and we are going to come to the field every day thinking we are going to win.”
The Tigers open up the season on Monday against Heritage Christian.
It will be the first of four-straight days with a game to start the season before spring break.
“We want to make sure we have the basics instilled and what to do on certain plays,” Archambeau said. “We want to use a good IQ in the box. I think people think that a quality at bat means you get on base, but that is not always true. If you can work the count and make the pitcher work, that is important too. We have four teams that are growing and have coaches that do a great job, and all the games are going to be competitive, regardless of records last year. We are going into the week very humbly and very open minded.”
