If the spurs offered 2/25 even duncan would have laughed and moved on.

11mil dollars less than expected is quite a break...

I disagree. 11M over 2 years, isn't much. If Duncan really wanted to give the Spurs a break, HE would have offered the 2/25 deal. That is giving your team a break. With the team already over the cap, that 5M won't do anything to sign another player. (pretty sure they will still be over the cap when the extension kicks in)

$11M is a lot to give up first of all.

second, it does help the franchise because that's $5.5M less per year before heading into lux tax land. i'm sure they're unable to pay lux tax, and this keeps scola trades from happening in the future (or in our case, KT/james jones trades)

Yes, I agree it helps them because they are approaching the luxury tax, but they are still over the cap. They can't use that savings to sign another player though.

Please.

He is already rich enough to retire now with no problem, and he's a stud for taking 5.5 million less per year? He's still getting paid 20 million a year!

What a guy.

Yet another example to remind people of when they insist that athletes will never, ever, possibly settle for less than they might be worth.

Obviously it's a huge benefit for the Spurs. The issue isn't the cap, but the luxury tax line. Their big three are now all signed at below market value, which means they can afford to continue investing in competent role players.

Tim is that really you?

Syracuselaxman44, you got it right. Actually as far as I can determine, no one on the Spurs ever fouls. If you doubt it ask the referees.

I think the type of person marion is makes it not matter, he plays hard but it is for selfish reasons, I think the buck stops at marion and nothing else really matters that much to him. It is why you don't ever see him try to break through against the spurs he just sort of coasts along.

Trophy or not he is gone for the $$$ next year.

For once...it ain't about the money. It's about Team 1st and because he is that way, that is why he has accomplished more than any other current player in the L including Shaq, Kobe, and Steve Nash.

How exactly has Tim (crybaby) Duncan accomplished more than any other player as you put it? Kobe and Shaq I would say have done more, definately Shaq. Just because Stern has a mad man crush on your boy Duncan and pretty much gave him another ring last year don't mean he earned it more than Shaq.

You agree that this doesn't do anything for the cap. It only helps keep money in the owner's pocket. That doesn't necessarily directly translate into them getting competent role players. Maybe it does, but we cannot say for sure. Hell, half of the moves that they made last year, were to save money, not to add role players.

Let's say that because of this move, the Spurs will not be in the luxury tax for 5 million, saving them 10. Will the Spurs use any of that 10 million, or even any of that 5 million for role players? I highly doubt it.

This is pure spin.

This allows them to use the full MLE next year without tax concerns, yes?

The extension was for the 2010/11 - 2011/12 seasons....right?

edit... yep, has no bearing on the MLE next year or not.

Okay Nashman-

Look up the numbers for the following honors:
ALL-NBA Team
ALL-NBA D Team
MVPs
Finals MVPs
All-Star Game Appearances
Championship Rings

Total all of that up and tell me...who has the most hardware?

Removed out of respect for Amare' My real response is below!!!

And as for $11 Million left on the table. Tell me...when Amare re-upped did he ask for Max or did he take one for the team and get less to allow for more cap flexibility to give his team more options at better players?

Not the same at all, and you should know it. Tim is already coming off of a Max contract and Amare hasn't. You can compare this in 3 years when Amare signs another extension. Horrible, horrible comparison.

You know what Castro, I agree with you. So for Amare' fans...MY BAD.

Lets use a different Suns player. Shawn Marion is talking extension right now...do you think that he'll tell Steve Kerr that he wants to stay on the team and will take less to give Kerr and the Suns more flexibility in the cap?

The Voltron thing is cool too. But I'm down with Great Mazinga!!!

Marion had better. If he doesn't he's outta here.
