Hey Russ. No comment? My guess ( I heard it elsewhere ) is that Floyd took his buyout payoff with agreement to remain tight lipped about the USC/Mayo play for pay info. UTEP must have the info that Floyd is clean enough to hire.

Yeah I saw this before. UTEP apparently told ESPN they were very adamant in wanting to know if Floyd would face personal sanctions from the NCAA before they hired him so the assumption is that the NCAA did NOT find any proof Floyd paid Guillory cash as was alleged. It doesn't mean any of the other violations committed while he was at USC didn't happen, just that ala Calipari, he will apparently escape personal sanctions.

Not too surprising proving a cash payment is near impossible, and when Floyd went to the NCAA testimony it was pretty obvious what was going on, Floyd felt USC abandoned him so Floyd went there to throw Mike Garrett under the bus and to preserve his own name. He was also up for the Louisiana Lafayette job. His first coaching job at at UTEP under Don Haskins so it's no surprise they hired him.

UTEP is also not exactly a program that shies away from controversy they start Derrick Caracter right now.

He said USC was his last job because his daughter is an actress in LA. Now he says he quit because the AD threw him under the bus.

he did 2 radio shows yesterday, on one he said there's an "underground market" for players in college ball and that anybody who knows this would know it's preposterous that someone could buy OJ Mayo for $1000. Of course that's not what was alleged, Mayo got much more than that from agents before, the allegation is that Floyd paid Guillory what he said was $1000. The guy who reported it said he saw the money in the envelope and thought it looked like much more than $1000. And it was supposed to be a thank you from Floyd to Guillory for delivering Mayo.

That was always the least plausible part of the story that even Floyd would be dumb enough to just hand cash to Guillory.

But I think Floyd made it pretty clear that while he insisted Mayo is a good person even he is conceding Mayo wasn't an amateur. He said he was proud of the investigation of Mayo USC did before signing him but then mentions the underground market. He very clearly was saying you can't buy him for $1000 it took a lot more than that and Tim Floyd didn't personally do that but if he got money while here that's not my fault.

Floyd is amazing, not even a week on the job and he's already done the following.

Floyd is actively trying to get 2 PF transfers to pick UTEP, Royce White from Minnesota and Leonard Washington from...USC. USC just kicked Washington off the team, he's the guy who punched Blake Griffin in the nuts on national tv playing for...TIm Floyd. he then went to the bench, told Tim Floyd (again on national tv) "I didn't do it", the video said something else. Washington was academically ineligible first half last season and is reportedly barely eligible when he left USC now.

Royce White highly recruited HS kid who was kicked off his HS team for cheating twice in school. He enrolled at Minnesota with an agreement with Tubby Smith he'd stay out of trouble. He then got arrested for shoplifting a pair of jeans and resisted arrest. Before that case had even been heard, he was accused of stealing a laptop from a dormroom on campus. Before either case could be resolved he announced, on youtube, that he was leaving Minnesota without ever playing there.

Yesterday Floyd was asked if he regretted recruiting OJ Mayo and he said no, he's a wonderful kid, I'd recruit him again if I had the chance. And now today I read that Floyd is trying to recruit... Todd Mayo, OJ's younger brother a senior at Germantown HS in Memphis. Todd Mayo is the brother who OJ flew out to LA twice during his year at USC to visit him, using Rodney Guillory's credit card to buy the plane tickets. When that story originally came out the NCAA said they were investigating the allegation and the possible implications to Todd Mayo's amateur status.

Yeah good luck UTEP, I hope you were smart enough to put a clause in Floyd's contract that if he breaks NCAA rules you don't have to pay him any severance.

There is a certain player who starred for Kansas State, this year, who transferred from Miami. He left Miami after more than one arrest, for some serious stuff. Martin had no problem with the guy. These guys just keep moving around. Sad but true.
