As the players traded for Richie Sexson sat in the visitors’ dugout at Bank One Ballpark Monday, talks continued in the Diamondbacks’ attempt to tie up the slugging first baseman to a contract extension.
"I made a couple of suggestions," Arizona general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said, after speaking to Casey Close, Sexson’s agent. "Something for them to talk about."
Sexson, acquired in December from the Milwaukee Brewers, has been seeking a guarantee of more than one year, and the longer the process drags out, the more likely Sexson will test the free-agent market in mid-November — when Seattle and the New York Mets could be among the interested teams.
"The focus is more on the length of the commitment," Close said Monday.
Lyle Overbay, who replaced Sexson as the Brewers’ first baseman after coming over from the D-Backs, set a team record Sunday with his 50th double. He went 0-for-4 Monday but has a .302 average.
"I got the opportunity that any big-leaguer wants," he said. "Milwaukee was an opportunity (to play). The Diamondbacks wanted to win and didn’t really have time to develop, and that’s one of those things that happen."
Second baseman Junior Spivey is out for the season with a shoulder injury, and lefty Chris Capuano is out with elbow tendinitis. Shortstop Craig Counsell, who got a standing ovation when he pinch hit in Monday’s ninth inning, is hitting .234 with 16 stolen bases. Catcher Chad Moeller snapped an 0-for-13 skid Monday with an RBI double. Lefty Jorge de la Rosa will start today.
"It’s been great for me," Moeller said. "It’s been a great atmosphere. I’m the biggest fan of our manager, Ned Yost. He’s so positive, so behind us all the way."
Said Counsell: "I have no complaints. The Brewers and Ned have given me a chance to play shortstop pretty much every day. That’s all any player can ask for. So it worked out great for me, really."
