4-seed Texas A&M (23-10) defeated 13-seed Yale 80-71 in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The victory was led by forward Pharrel Payne's dominant performance. The junior delivered 25 points and 10 rebounds in his best performance of the season during the most important time of the year.
Payne's performance was a significant portion of the Aggies' bench scoring, pouring 42 points, including a surprising 10 points from reserve guard Jace Carter, who hit two key 3-pointers in the second half to help create more distance from the Bulldogs. Head coach Buzz Williams' focus on inside scoring led to 48 paint points, which need to continue being the focus moving forward.
Late Thursday night, Texas A&M's Round of 32 opponent was revealed. 5-seed Michigan eked out a 68-65 victory against 12-seed UC San Diego, shooting 42% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc. While the Wolverines are coming off a Big Ten Championship, Texas A&M is 3-1 against the conference this season after defeating Ohio State, Rutgers, and Purdue. The only loss came to Oregon.
On paper, the Aggies' only real matchup issue is the Wolverine's forward duo of Vlad Golden and Danny Wolf, who are 7'0" and 7'1", which could be an issue for Pharrel Payne. However, the best way to thwart two big men is for opposing guards to drive the paint, meaning Zhuric Phelps and Manny Obaseki need to take more shots near the rim and hope to get fouled.
After scoring 16 points, star guard Wade Taylor IV's 1-6 showing from beyond the arc needs improvement, especially if the Aggies' 3-point defense fails to defend the perimeter compared to Thursday's performance against the Bulldogs.
If the Aggies can get past the Wolverines, Texas A&M will make it back to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 2017-2018 season, where they lost to, yes, Michigan.
