The Tennessee Titans made a surprising move on Saturday, parting ways with another player signed during the 2024 offseason spending spree.
The Titans have released cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, one season into a three-year deal last offseason. The veteran cornerback was coming off an injury-riddled first season in Nashville, playing in only eight games and recording 24 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and four passes defensed.
The move comes just days before a $3.98 million roster bonus kicks in on March 17 and will save the Titans just $1.725 million in cap space for the season. It will also add $12.5 million in dead cap space in 2025.
With the release of Awuzie, the Titans could look to add some depth in free agency or during the draft. They do have L’Jarius Sneed returning from injury, along with Jarvis Brownlee and Roger McCreary, but this move leaves them quite thin at the position.
Awuzie is the second player from the 2024 free agency class that the Titans have jettisoned. He joins linebacker Kenneth Murray, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys earlier in the week. Sneed, center Lloyd Cushenberry and wide receiver Calvin Ridley are all that remains from the $228 million spending spree overseen by former general manager Ran Carthon.
