Well yes but at least its coming back.

How I hate this HR-21 by comparison. Its the last 20% of functionality but man its sucks

My 2yr agreement will be up by the time this launches. And I am sure I can get 2 for 19.99 per unit.

Great news!

Huh? how so? I was looking at their website to see if I could upgrade to the HD DVR which looks like it's generic now (not TiVo). Someone told me it would be free if I'm renting the TiVo but looks like it costs $200.

Tivo vs HR21 ?

The differences are subtle but have far reaching and very annoying consequences.

There are some functions that the HR 21 just doesn't have but for the most part its that the HR 21 has a function similar but not quite and the 'not quite' is the rub.

HR 21 has 2 tuners but there is a limitations what you can record and watch simultaneously. Tivo you have 2 record channels ... period and you can watch anything you like independent of what is recording. Not true on HR 21.

The problem is LOTS of little things like that. The type of things that when the marketing folks write up the description you can't tell the difference. Until you try to use it.

HR 21 works [albeit it a little more slowly] but it just isn't as polished a product as a Tivo, not even close.

From Tivo Community forum:

As has been posted in several threads, Tivo CEO said at the Citi conference that it was delayed until 2010 and they refused to talk about it at all at CES. So take that as you will. Basically I wouldn't be counting on it for at least another year to year and a half.

The one thing that I am stoked about is that the new TIVO units will be able to share recordings across your home network. So, if you have multiple TIVO's, you can watch a recording from any box in any room.

I don't care how long it takes...I will wait.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
Finally. I was pissed when TIVO and Directv parted ways. Glad to see that this whole sad saga is coming to an end.

I have been reading some of the forums where DTV guys post. They will be available but he is saying the Direct TVs own units will be pushed.

If you had made that statement to me when they first came out (and they did away with Tivo) I would have agreed. In fact, I did agree and held on to my TIVO receivers as long as possible.

However, I am not sure that really applies anymore. They have come along way. I am pretty satisfied with my HDTV DVR's. The software has improved significantly sense day one.

I will check out the TIVO's but it's not the "must" it used to be for me. I will check them out though.

Its not good enough to make me junk my POS DTV DVR or not until I do a lot of other things but ...

The Tivo I had a number of years ago was still vastly superior to the DTV dvr I have today.

The DTV dvr has just enough features to put on sales info to make you think it is the same thing. It is NOT, if you have the differences explained you think, that's not a big deal ... but yes it is.

The other dvrs are built to let the sales guys have enough point to make them look like a Tivo.

Most of the features that are important to me, I now have. In fact, there are features my DTV DVR has that my TIVO's back then didn't.

Tivo is getting blasted for their new DVR.

My biggest gripe with the current dvr is - no dual tuners!

With TiVo I could pause one channel, flip to the other, then pause that one, go back to the first one and skip thru all the commercials.

Edit: Well, I shouldn't say no dual tuners - it does have them but they don't function the same as TiVo did.

Have you tried pushing the down arrow on the remote? It doesn't work as seemless as Tivo used to but you can pause the show you are watching, push the down arrow twice and then pick another show to watch. Toggling between the shows is done with the down arrow as well, but the show will start playing as soon as you switch.

Sorry for stating something you may already have known but from your comment, it sounded as if you weren't aware DirecTV's dvr did this.

I've never owned a tivo, but off the top of my head, receiving the Mpeg4 HD channels is one important feature it offers that the tivo model doesn't.
