To all those too lazy to use caps or punctuation

joemama on the Suns board can move only one finger so he uses voice recognition software to post. He takes the time to train it to use caps and punctuation and even proper spelling of all the Slavic names.

The mods usually deal with these things with pms. I did that recently and the poster blew me off. It takes me so long to type individual messages that I felt it a better use of my time to make a public statement.

Please, no sympathetic messages or e-mails. I'm glad I'm alive and don't feel sorry for anybody, including myself.

Everybody makes typos and other mistakes. That's fine. I don't go back to fix mine either. But if you wish to post on ASFN, make the effort to make it readable.

I've used internet message boards or some kind of equivalent since the early 90's, and this is the first time I've ever seen an administrator make this kind of decree.

I really applaud it. Proper punctuation and grammar really makes a board easier to read. I'm taking some courses on internet communication, and they really emphasize this kind of approach. Good call.

I agree Skorp. One other little thing I would add is for everyone to please make use of paragraphs if you have a fairly long comment. One big huge blog-like paragraph is difficult to read.

If I am reading a long thread I like to read all of the posts but towards the end I will skip one if it is a big block of sentences with no breaks in it. Off of my soapbox now.

Doesn't really bother me at all. About the only thing I ever have an issue with is posters who type a billion words and no paragraph break. Serious punctuation problems are one thing, but most people aren't seriously having issues with it.

capitalization is fairly useless anyway, at least if you use correct punctuation. much ado about nothing, imo.

Honestly if you feel the need to be too lazy you can always keep Microsoft word open and type your message in there and then cut and paste it into the text portion of the post message. Just do a tools/spelling and grammar check and the system will auto punctuate and correct grammatical errors, that’s what I did with this post no commas, capitalization’s or punctuation let the system do it for you.

I think the most important part of the whole thing is breaking up your comments. Its is very hard to read one LONG paragraph without any kind of breaks.

My spelling sucks, but I do check it if I am not sure about it.

The best forums on the web are those that are clear and neat (see www.televisionwithoutpity.com, tuckermaxx.com).

Something most (but unfortunately not all) posters do that I would like to see improved is the proper naming of threads. Thread names like "Wow this is cool!" or "I was thinking..." are lame. Giving threads proper titles ensures that they can be easily searched later and bumped if necessary, rather than starting new threads.

I can understand why you would want to post a decree like this, but is it really necessary? Do we really have a ton of "IM speak" on the board as a whole?

Is my grammar correct all of the time? No, but I do the major things, like breaking up major thoughts into paragraphs.

At times, I wish that more people took their time with their posts, myself included. I do not treat my posts on an internet message board, (even one that I frequent often) like a college essay, nor should we have to.

As long as we keep most of the slang/ebonics/IM speak to a minimum, we should be fine.

This thing has saved my butt so many times. I'm just a terrible speller, so it's always nice having the internet browser tell me I made a mistake before I make it public...

Bravo, Skkorp! And yes, Firefox does have spell check built in. Any misspelled words show up with red underline. Pretty easy, really. Although it does not help with proper case.
