Tony Bennett was the first men's basketball coach to lose to a No. 16 seed in the NCAA tournament. He knows that — it gets brought up a lot. But you have to give Bennett credit, he has no problem laughing about the historic upset now.
Bennett — who won a national championship with Virginia the following season — abruptly retired in October just weeks ahead of the season. The Cavaliers struggled in his absence, but they turned to a familiar coach for Bennett's replacement this week.
Virginia named former VCU coach Ryan Odom as its new head basketball coach on Tuesday. Odom, as Bennett obviously remembered, was UMBC's head coach when the Retrievers pulled off that legendary 16-1 upset in 2018.
In a congratulatory message to Odom, Bennett made sure to jokingly reference that loss. And you know what — it was too funny.
Well played.
College basketball fans loved that message too.

Tony Bennett says he's always respected and like Ryan Odom as a coach "except for those two hours in March of 2018." https://t.co/brjdHSH5EM

New rule: if a 16 seed beats a 1 seed, the 16 seed coach gets to take the 1 seed coach’s job https://t.co/Nlcgf5nuu7
