No surprise, but it is official that Tony Jefferson has been tendered.

Strange thing is he was given a low tender, the Cardinals can still match an offer, but one would think to try and get something if you lose him.

Without knowing a lot about NFL contracts I'm wondering if an NFL team is limited to how many type tenders they can offer? If this is not an issue, it seems like the Cardinals are drawing a line in the sand that if he shops for a significantly larger contract they will let him walk.

They can offer as many RFA tenders as they have RFAs, and they decide which type of RFA tender to give their players. Problem is, since there are far less players on 3-year rookie deals because all of the drafted players get 4-year contracts, there aren't many RFAs anymore.

Regarding Jefferson, either the team knows what his market value is already, or they're content to let him walk. I do think Keim should've given him the 2nd round tag.

They're taking a chance offering him the low tender. If he sings somewhere else, we get no compensation because he was undrafted.

I agree about the 2nd round tag. Thanks for the information.

The fact he didnt get 2nd round tender means the coaching staff doesnt consider him very important for our defense
At this i think we will have a Brand new pair of safeties
1 is Iloka
2nd someone like Killebrew,Neal,Kearse

They just put a "for sale" sig on Jefferson's back. The way he was covering TEs and making plays down the stretch, it is very difficult to fathom why they would want to make their ability to retain Jefferson all the more difficult---and---if he signs elsewhere now they get zero in return.

First the Cooper news---now this.

Meanwhile, Cory Redding and his 5 tackles, 0 sacks is returning at $4M.

And with regard to Cooper the coaches are saying they like a PS player, Antoine McClain, at RG. Is this how far Cooper has fallen in the coaches' eyes? Not to say McClain lacks talent...but a top ten pick in the draft is being out-favored at RG by an undrafted PS player?

There will be a veteran guard added----but all the talk about this year being Cooper's chance to prove himself is now a bunch of empty and also rhetoric.

I thought we had his rights and could match any offer?

I am ok with this tender

Yup. I think the Cards would match almost anything reasonable for him — and it would be a pretty bad front office indeed that makes an insane offer to Tony Jefferson.

Apparently, the Cardinals agree with me that Jefferson is "just a guy."

He is worth a mil which the tender will pay him, and if someone sniffs around then they can match if it is close.

Jefferson is a good 53 man roster player, but his physical limitations will always keep him from being more than a replaceable starter at S.

And you need those guys. Jefferson played a lot of special teams and has contributed there, as well.

He's getting about $900K more than the veteran minimum on the tender; if someone else is willing to do a deal for more than that...?

Tony Jefferson is way more than "just a guy."

"Just a guy" wouldn't have:

* Led the Cardinals in tackles in the post-season with 20 (11 versus CAR and 9 versus GB)

* Been one of the 2-3 players to show up against CAR.

* Posted (during the regular season) 78 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 3 stuffs, 5 passes defended, 2 interceptions (one to seal a huge win on MNF) and 1 TD.

* Been the best and most improved cover safety on TEs this season in an area that needed huge improvement.

I think we will see the Cardinals and Tony Jefferson agree to a new deal that will keep TJ in AZ for the next 3-4 years.

This.

Calais, Tyrann, Pat Pete, & Tony are the defensive guys we should keep at all cost.

I dunno - if you give him a low tender, that actually allows him to find his market value (versus market value minus a second round pick). It may make sense for both the team and the player to have a low tender, which allows them to shop themselves and find their 'real' value, which the Cardinals can match.

I think it's pretty smart.

The more I think of it, what you are saying is spot-on. Had the Cardinals offered the 2nd round tender of $2.55M, he might have been content to play at that figure this year with the thought of hitting FA next year. The lower tender gives him more incentive to sign a 3-4 year deal this year.
