No. 4 Tennessee (29-4) defeated Alabama State (16-18), 10-2, Tuesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Vols scored eight runs in the fourth inning.
AJ Russell made his third start of the season against Alabama State. He pitched two innings and recorded two strikeouts. Russell totaled 21 pitches, including 16 strikes, against seven batters. The junior right-handed pitcher allowed one hit and zero walks.
"I think that's a conversation to be had where it'd be nice to get him into some situations where he's got guys on, and he's got some pressure on him," Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello said of Russell. "It was just good to double up the pitch count, double up the amount of innings."
Russell is returning from Tommy John surgery. He totaled 12 pitches, including 11 strikes, against four batters in his second appearance versus Tennessee Tech on April 1.
Russell made his season debut on Feb. 25 against North Alabama. He pitched one inning and recorded three strikeouts. Russell totaled 17 pitches, including 11 strikes, against three batters.
Tennessee's game against North Alabama marked Russell's first pitching appearance since May 26, 2024 versus LSU in the SEC Tournament championship game. After experiencing arm soreness last season, he underwent Tommy John surgery.
