Top 10 Teams Losing

Kirk Herbstriet likes to say that you can pretty much count on at least 1 top ten team losing every week. Some of the time that is automatic (2 top ten teams playing each other). So far, he is right this season.

WEEK #: Ranking of losing team at gametime (who beat them)
WEEK 1: #5 Michigan (NR Appalachian State)
WEEK 2: #9 Virginia Tech (#2 LSU)
WEEK 3: #9 Louisville (NR Kentucky)
WEEK 4: #10 Penn State (NR Michigan)

If this holds true, who do you think is going down in week 5?
(I used the AP rankings)

#1 USC (@ Washington)
#2 LSU (@ Tulane)
#3 Oklahoma (@ Colorado)
#4 Florida (vs. Auburn)
#5 West Virginia (@ #18 South Florida)
#6 California (@ #11 Oregon)
#7 Texas (vs. Kansas State)
#8 Ohio State (@ Minnesota)
#9 Wisconsin (vs. Michigan State)
#10 Rutgers (vs. Maryland)

My best bet pick would be Michigan State over Wisconsin.

Cheese farmers schedule, to date, has been weak. They should have lost to Iowa last week, but pulled it off in the 4th q.

Good thread. That's not a bad call for your pick either. I'd go with WVU falling to South Florida.

WVU/South Fl is a good call imo. I can think of 2 more games, that are ripe, on that list.

Cal or Wisconsin seem to be the best chance for upsets...maybe WV since they are on the road.

West Virginia AND Wisconsin may both go down. Cal confuses me, don't know for sure on this one. The line has Oregon favored, suggesting the rankings are screwy.

Good thread.

I dunno about the "WVU-bandwagon- of- losing" people are jumping on. Sure it is possible, but let me tell you why I thinkit is not likely.

1. Revenge game - WVU has had this game circled since last year. USF killed their season with
the upset in Morgantown

2. @USF - There could be as many as 20,000 WVU fans at this game (I dont think the stadium holds more than 48-50,000) correct me if I am wrong. Not intimidating to them in the least.

3. WVU's defense - Not the same defense as last year. They have stoned people this year and while they need to improve in pass coverage, they arent nearly as dreadful as last year. They play the run very well.

4. Slaton and White. So far this year, every team that has played them has tried to take one of them away. The other always comes through and beats you. They cant be stopped. One of them is likely to go to the house from anywhere on the field on any given play.

5. Raynaud and Schmitt - Senior WR Raynaud is having a great year and is fantastic in space. He is fast and very hard to cover..he will get 80-100 yards and a TD.

6. Noel Devine - If you havent heard of this guy yet, let me be the first to introduce you. True Freshman from Florida. Recruited hard by FSU, Miami, MIchigan, USC, etc etc. He is one of the most electrifying runners I have ever seen. Very small but tough. Against Maryland he had 5 carries fro 110 yards and a TD. They bring him in to spell Slaton.

I think this will be a great game and I dont expect either team to run away early with it. WVU is notoriously slow starter, so halftime might see USF ahead. Still think WVU wins going away 44-31

One of these teams will end up the odds on favorite to win the Big East after they play this week. USF has a very good defense. WVU has a very good offense.

We'll have almost an entirely new top 10 next week(3 new in the top 5!)....Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, West Virginia and Rutgers all losing really shakes things up.

But that is the way the polls work - the other teams with one loss dropped when they lost, so now it is OK, TX, FLA, WVU, ets's turn.

Goes to show that pre season and early polls are BS .

This has been a crazy college football season so far. I think at the end of the year we'll hear the biggest outcry for a playoff system ever. Usually there's an outright dominant team or two that make the bowl system work out because they are obviously better than everyone else. No one looks invincible this year.

Well, let's see...we should have USC, LSU, Cal, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Kentucky, USF and Boston College all in the top 10, with Arizona State, Hawaii, Purdue, and Cincinnati all having at least a bit of an argument as undefeateds. I'd probably let Arizona State and Purdue sneak in, so I'd set the top 10 like this:

LSU
USC
CAL
OSU
Wisconsin
USF
BC
Kentucky
Purdue
ASU

I've actually just looked at the polls...Hawaii isn't getting much love, nor is ASU. Purdue is FINALLY ranked. I guess I nailed the top 8, and I can't argue much that they didn't vault Purdue and ASU too high, since they haven't played tough schedules. WOW. So, now who says USF has no chance to win the title? I'm officially on the USF vs Kentucky BCS Championship Game bandwagon!!!
