Mar. 15—Pima (Ariz.) Community College is some 1,500 miles from Danville, but the Aztecs enjoy a homecourt advantage every time they qualify for the NJCAA national basketball tournament.
They have the rowdy, retired residents at Liberty Village of Danville to thank for that.
Carrying on a tradition that started in 2018, the top-seeded and undefeated Aztecs on Sunday will visit Liberty Estates and Hawthorne Inn to chow down, chop it up and say 'Say cheese!' with their biggest fans. "They love coming and we love having them," Liberty Village director of marketing Amy Thompson said.
Residents will wear Pima's colors — blue and gray — on Sunday. Many will then attend Pima's games next week at Danville Area Community College, starting with Tuesday's opener.
Among the treats awaiting longtime coach Brian Peabody and his team on Sunday: homemade cookies decorated with player names and jersey numbers. Last year, one of the Pima players was so impressed he took off his Pima College shirt and gave it to Barbara Reffett (pictured) as a souvenir.
The residents "have adopted them as their team," Thompson said. "When they come here, they absolutely light up. It's a great partnership."
The public is invited to Sunday's reception, which starts at 2 p.m.
