In a post-free agency mock draft from CBS Sports, an offensive line prospect, who is widely considered the top in this year's class, fell all the way to the Indianapolis Colts at pick No. 14.
Kyle Stackpole put out a mock draft once the dust had settled on the first wave of NFL free agency and took into account how those signings might impact a team's approach when it comes to draft.
In that process, luckily for the Colts, they were able to land LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, who has often been taken inside the top five of quite a few mock drafts and almost always inside the top 10.
"The Colts get a steal here with Will Campbell," wrote Stackpole. "His 77 3/8-inch wingspan is extremely short for NFL offensive tackles, but he's shown the ability to dominate defenders in the SEC week in and week out. Whether he stays at tackle or moves to guard, he'll be a mainstay along the Colts offensive line."
I don't know how likely it is that Campbell would actually fall this far, but I would bet that the Colts would be quite happy if he did.
With Will Fries joining the Minnesota Vikings, there are some added unknowns along the offensive line for the Colts currently. Perhaps that can be remedied with Matt Goncalves moving to right guard, which then means the Colts have their starting five already on the roster.
However, even so, adding competition wouldn't be a bad thing, not to mention that interior depth and a swing tackle is needed--and Campbell could fill any one of those roles. He could compete with Goncalves at guard--where some draft analysts believe he will be best at the NFL level--or Campbell could fill in at tackle if an injury occurs.
In 558 pass-blocking snaps this past season at left tackle, Campbell was credited with giving up only two sacks and 18 pressures, according to PFF. For what it's worth, in run-blocking grade, he ranked 87th among all tackles.
Any chance of Anthony Richardson taking a step forward this season starts with the Colts putting a sturdy offensive line in front of him.
