Top preseason spring sports athletes of the year revealed by the Marion Star

MARION — There were 8,802 votes cast this spring in the Marion Star's Preseason Athlete of the Year polls.

The most active MarionStar.com poll was for Preseason Softball Player of the Year where there were 4,314 votes. Winning it was North Union junior shortstop Kennedy Harrah, who earned 1,462 votes for 34 percent. She came into this season as a second-team All-Marion Star pick in 2024, posting a .422 batting average with 30 runs scored, 19 stolen bases and 11 RBIs.

Boys Best of the Week: Marion Harding tennis team starts season with 4-0 record

Taking second in the softball poll was Cardington senior pitcher and third baseman Ari Simpson with 1,399 votes (32 percent), while Northmor senior third baseman and pitcher Kate Kissling had 300 votes (7 percent), and Highland junior shortstop and outfielder Kate Clements had 282 votes (7 percent).

Others receiving votes were River Valley's Samantha Woods, Mount Gilead's Savannah Wilt, Ridgedale's Kenzie Delaney, Elgin's Madison Hill, Pleasant's Faith Staley and Marion Harding's Kameron Biederman.

Baseball​


The baseball preseason poll collected 1,734 votes, and Cardington senior outfielder Denton Garrison earned 497 for 29 percent to win it. Garrison came into the season as a second-team Marion Star pick from 2024, producing a .352 batting average with five doubles, 16 RBI, 16 steals and 22 runs.

Kort Sears, a senior pitcher and infielder at Highland, took in 338 votes (20 percent) for second place, while Trent Caudill, a senior catcher at Pleasant, had 266 votes (15 percent) for third, and Trevor Brubaker, a junior pitcher and shortstop at Northmor, had 235 votes (14 percent) for fourth.

Other nominees were Marion Harding's Ray J Scott-Harbolt, River Valley's Hayden Kanagy, Elgin's Jacob Isler, Ridgedale's Ayden Salyer, North Union's Tyler Krebehenne and Mount Gilead's Cameron Vickers.

Girls Track and Field​


There were 1,685 votes cast in the girls track and field poll, and Marion Harding junior distance runner Lydia Price won it with 804 votes (48 percent). She came into the season as a Division I regional qualifier and a Mid Ohio Athletic Conference champion in the 1600 and 3200 meters.

Highland softball thrower Kynzie Green was runner-up with 384 votes (23 percent) followed by River Valley senior pole vaulter and relay runner Eva Moran with 194 (12 percent) and Pleasant senior hurdler Taydon Obenour with 123 (7 percent).

Other nominees were North Union's Gabby Lindsey, Mount Gilead's Abby Leonhard, Elgin's Julia Kuba, Ridgedale's Maddie McKenzie and Northmor's Natalie Hunter.

There were 26 votes in the poll from Canada, 10 from the Netherlands and seven from Mexico among other countries in the girls poll.

Boys Track and Field​


Highland's Jett Black, a sophomore pole vaulter who earned a state championship during the winter indoor season, took in 401 of 879 votes for 46 percent to win it.

Finishing second in the poll was River Valley sophomore pole vaulter Ben Isler who got 136 votes (16 percent). Taking third was Marion Harding senior sprinter and jumper Logan Thrapp who got 99 votes (11 percent). Getting fourth was North Union junior sprinter Griffin Osborne who got 84 votes (10 percent).

Also receiving votes were Mount Gilead's Will Baker, Elgin's Landon Shepard, Pleasant's Will Lichtenberger, Ridgedale's Brogan Weston and Northmor's Cowin Becker.

Boys Tennis​


There were 192 votes in the boys tennis poll (including seven from Peru) with Pleasant sophomore Alex Yancey getting 92 for 48 percent. Marion Harding junior Sebastian Lisiecki was runner-up with 45 votes (23 percent), and senior teammate Andres Rosas was third with 39 votes (20 percent).

Also nominated were River Valley's Daniel Laytart, Pleasant's Cael Bower and RV's Liam Bier.
