Has anyone been following this Doctor Who spinoff? It's really good. The first season was a lot of fun. It hits a lot of sci-fi stuff, but really focuses on the human element too. Great relationship dynamics without getting too soap opera. The second season has started out great as well...the 4th episode...very cool.

The new season premieres tonight on Starz, is anybody going to be watching this? It will be awhile for me as we recently cancelled our movie channels but I'm really looking forward to the return of Captain Jack. Anyone else?

I have it set to record the season, and I just finished watching the first episode. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like the angle they took in getting it started again, save for the lone deus ex machina moment that frankly had to happen.

As long as it's consistent with the style of the show I'm rarely bothered by that particular device. It bugs me when it's used in Criminal Minds or something like that but not so much when it's in a Doctor Who kind of show. I'm pretty sure that if the Greeks hadn't already perfected that routine, Russell T Davies would have.

I hope you're not the only one watching this show. I'd like to see it survive a whole season so I can happily Netflix it (I would have to sadly Netflix it if it gets cancelled midseason).

Eh, like I said, the moment had to happen, so it didn't really bother me. I thought the show was excellent, which frankly matches up with the high quality it has always been.

I didn't have the background on the show, just had seen all the ads so decided to watch it.

I was entertained and will more than likely look into all the other past stuff to try and get a better feel for what has lead up to all this and everything. But I'll probably give it a few episodes to keep me, even without the background.

If you have Netflix, the complete Torchwood series (prior to this new season) is available for instant streaming. For that matter, so is the Doctor Who series that Torchwood spun off of.

Not familiar with the other Torchwood series, but this pilot episode was cheesy, hokey, and felt like it only is going to get worse. I know there has to be some suspension of disbelief but goodness gracious was this one a stinker.

Torchwood is a spinoff from the recent Russell T Davies version of Doctor Who (a show that originally had a very long run starting in the 60's). It wouldn't be Doctor Who (or Torchwood) if it wasn't cheesy and hokey. But, the episodes for the most part are very well written and after awhile you don't even notice the things that would normally make the casual viewer laugh while reaching for the remote. They aren't for everybody but they are a lot of fun if you can settle in for the long run.

Yeah, save your comments for shows that maybe, you know, you've seen from the beginning? Why did you even bother to watch it?

Wow didn't mean to offend. I guess I missed the preview for the show that said if you haven't seen this don't watch it or at the very least don't let a message board post that goes by the handle Stout know that you did.

Sorry if I came off harsh. It's annoying for someone to start watching a show that's had a bunch of seasons and start calling it cheesy, that's all. It would have been like me starting to watch Lost in season three and then whinging on about some stupid machine that makes all this noise, but that we can't see.

To be fair, I whinged about that after the pilot episode, and never watched again :D But if I had started watching several seasons in and started complaining about it...well, it would have been silly for me to have done it in the first place, IMO.

Other geeks may already know this, but I just found out that "torchwood" is an anagram for "doctor who." it was taken from the label of some pirated (and later recovered) doctor who tapes. They were labeled as such to disguise them.

I'm watching the David tenant episodes now and looked them up on imdb and read it in the trivia section.

That's a cool fact I didn't know.

Well, the second episode wasn't nearly as fun as the first, but it didn't stink either. At least it set things up for a wild ride, or so it seems.

This series starts out meh, builds to OK, and really hits a strong side mid-2nd series. That's when all the character development starts to pay off. I think they try to ride some weaker character elements too much, but it started to take on the look-and-feel of 2nd or 3rd season X-Files. Even similar character dynamics. I hope they can keep going and developing these characters for a couple more seasons.
