New Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin may be joined by another former Arizona bench coach on his staff.
Former Toronto Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca, the D-Backs’ bench coach in 1998-2000, is being considered as third-base coach on Melvin's staff, according to two industry sources.
Al Pedrique, who had been in line to return to third-base coach after serving as interim manager the second half of the season, is leaving the Diamondbacks, probably to join Houston in a front-office position.
Tosca, 51, was Toronto's third-base coach the first part of the 2002 season before taking over as manager when Buck Martinez was fired.
The Blue Jays fired Tosca on Aug. 8 with a 191-191 career record. He also has 17 years of minor league managing experience.
Jay Bell has been named bench coach and Glenn Sherlock (bullpen), Mark Davis (pitching) and Mike Aldrete (hitting or first base) are expected to be on the staff.
Will Clark, the former All-Star first baseman and Jeff Moorad client, is not expected to be interested in a full-time coaching position.
SHORT HOPS
General manager Joe Garagiola Jr. spoke Tuesday to Casey Close, the agent for first baseman Richie Sexson, and expects a reply to Arizona's latest offer by the end of the week. . . .
Mark Grace is expected to meet this week with team president Rich Dozer to decide whether he wants to continue as a team broadcaster or try his hand at a minor league on-field position.
