Kings Acquire Songaila
June 23, 2003
Sacramento, CA. June 23, 2003--The Sacramento Kings today acquired the draft rights to 6'9 forward Darius Songaila from the Boston Celtics in exchange for a pair of second-round draft picks, the No. 56 selection in this year’s draft and a second-round choice in 2005.
Songaila, who was selected with the 50th overall pick by the Celtics in last year’s NBA draft, played last season in the Russian A Superleague for CSKA Moscow, averaging 12.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 18 games to earn Eurobasket first-team all-league honors. He also averaged 14.5 points (.455 FG%, .857 FT%), 3.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists for CSKA Moscow in the 2003 Euroleague Final Four.
The 25-year-old Sengaila played four collegiate seasons at Wake Forest University where he averaged 14.3 points (.511 FG%, .831 FT%), 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.05 steals in 130 career games. He earned second-team All-ACC honors and honorable mention all-America accolades as a senior (2001-02), averaging 17.9 points (.523 FG%, .854 FT%), 8.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.32 steals in starting all 34 games. The Demon Deacons advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both Songaila’s junior (2000-01) and senior seasons.
Songaila has competed for his native Lithuania (born in Marijampole, Lithuania) in numerous international competitions, including the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2001 European Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. In an 85-83 loss to the United States in the 2000 Olympic Games, Songaila recorded 12 points (4-6 FG, 4-5 FT), two rebounds, and two assists.
“Darius (Songaila) had a terrific season in Europe last year after an outstanding collegiate career at Wake Forest. He’s a skilled big man who should be a good compliment to our roster,” states Kings President, Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.
