I liked the signing of Greinke but it is looking like this team will not be contending for a playoff spot this year. If the Diamondbacks are out of it by July, there will be some teams that are contending that would love to have Greinke. I see teams like the Red Sox, Toronto, White Sox and Mariners as clubs who would love to have Greinke. The Diamondbacks would have to eat some of the contract and probably take a big contract, but if they could get a couple of prospects, I would do the trade. Who knows, the Cubs are definitely going to be contending and I am sure they would love to make the trade to go for it all this season. Theo traded Nomar before the deadline in 2004, so he is not scared of making a blockbuster trade to better the team.

If nobody else was willing to give Greinke the amount of $$ the Dbacks did, who is going to trade for him? AZ isn't the type of big market team that can eat a major portion of a contract like his, just to move him.

Don't trade Greinke

Now that Greinke has made the adjustment to a hitter's park and is pitching good ball, you want to give him away?

He is the Pitcher around whom we build going forward, which was the reason for signing him. Although this season has been disappointing, largely due to injuries, I am not giving up on what will follow, even if it not this season.

Plan for success. Giving away Greinke is not planning for success.

Shelby Miller? I wouldn't give up on him either. His ERA last season was 3.02, preceded by 3.74 and 3.06 and he is only 26 years old.

As Chip said, putting him on the DL is not just to let his hand injury heal, but to give him an emotional breather.

I'm not even giving up on us reaching a Wild Card spot this season. Next season, I want to see us in the World Series. 'Ain't gonna happen without Greinke. And without Goldy addressing his problem.

Greinke is the least tradable player on the Diamondbacks right now followed closely by Tomas.

Greinke will at least give us positive production on the field though, Tomas is going to cost us $60M through 2020 giving us less than replacement value.

Agree. The Tomas deal is the one that hurts the most (besides the Miller one- as of now)

I think fans will "feel" the Tomas deal more than the Miller trade. Even if Swanson becomes the next great MLB SS, his success or failure no longer directly affects the team.

Tomas salary will prevent this small market team from making moves in the future that will directly affect the construction and flexibility of the team.

For sure. It sure is disappointing to see where the Dbacks are at this point in the season when there was so much hype before the season started. I was looking forward to finally being contenders in the west again, but that is quickly fading away

Tomas is in a slump, and was one of the few hot hitters at the beginning of the season. I have some expectation that he will improve still. Maybe I am the only one.

Will he perform to his contract tho? THATS the 60 million dollar question

Sorry but I dont think he is in a slump, I think he WAS on a hot streak. This Yaz is much closer to the real Yaz than what we saw in April.

That deal and the Miller deal are two of the worst in Dbacks history, depending on how they shake out, they could be the two worst...

Tomas was a classic example of going for the Cuban players. We paid him way too much for what he is contributing. Don't know the metrics on all of this, but appears, we overpaid for what we got.

Frankly I as just glad to see the team go for a Cuban player. One of my biggest problems with this team for a long time was how the front office simply ignored Cuban players.

And, unfortunately for us, Puig set the market for Tomas, which appears to have burned us at least thus far.

Man, talk about a winners curse. For reference, Puig’s remaining contract with LAD vs Tomas with AZ

Puig:
2016: 5.5M
2017: 6.5M
2018: 7.5M

Tomas:
2016: 4M
2017: 6M
2018: 10M
2019: 15.5M
2020: 17M

2018 $13,167,000

Couldn't agree more! The Tomas deal is baffling and so damn irritating! I'll never understand what they saw in this guy to prompt to make such an illogical investment in him.

That right there should have told them to be cautious in their salary negotiations and expectations.

Gauging Tomás in terms of Puig's similar background and style would have been foresight.

Especially with Tomás' final year salary more than double that of Puig.

No matter what stats either of them have put up, neither has been a difference maker.
