Trae Young may have only played one season in an Oklahoma basketball uniform. But the Norman native is a Sooner through and through.
The Atlanta Hawks star guard didn't forget his roots in donating 150 free tickets to the Oklahoma women's basketball team's first-round game in the NCAA Tournament against Florida-Gulf Coast for Norman-area youth this week. The third-seeded Sooners play No. 14 FGCU 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Before that, No. 6-seed Iowa plays No. 11-seed Murray State at 11 a.m. Both games will be played in the Lloyd Noble Center.
Round two will also be played in Norman. The Sooners are hoping to make their first Sweet 16 appearance under head coach Jennie Baranczyk. With the opportunity to host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Young is helping with the push to pack the Lloyd Noble Center.
Young played just one season at OU before entering the NBA Draft. He was taken in the first round in 2018 by the Dallas Mavericks, who quickly traded his rights to the Hawks for the rights to Luka Doncic. In his seventh NBA season, Young has been named an All-Star three times.
The Norman North High graduate has played the 10th most games of any former Sooner in history. He's ninth in games played among Sooner State natives and trails only Edmond's Josh Richardson among active players. Putnam City's Alvan Adams is the all-time leader in both categories with 988 career games.
Entering Saturday, the Hawks the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Young's former team plays defending national champion Connecticut in the first round of the men's NCAA Tournament at 7:25 p.m. Saturday night.
